What People Are Saying About Playland Skating Center

In Short – The center, whose motto is "they didn't make skating rinks like this when your parents were kids," has given a facelift to the old school roller rinks. The hi-fi is replaced with a state-of-the-art sound system. The requisite disco ball is actually a giant, shimmering disco roller skate. A DJ spins a mix of old disco standards and new bubble-gum pop to please the over-30, as well as the 13-year-olds.

Don't buy a birthday party package there

by DParx at Citysearch

The place is good for an afternoonn of skating, but forget the overpriced birthday parties. You will just be paying about 70-100.00 to sit at a table and the kids will hardly be at the table anyway. We had a terrible experience doing a birthday party here. We would have been far better off taking them to a fast food place to eat and just gong skating. The table is not worth paying for. They have made this very expensive.

Not a safe place

by momoftjl at Citysearch

If you're willing to take a chance on being robbed, feel free to go to this place. My husband took my daughter to a birthday party here and when they got to the parking lot, found that someone had smashed a rear window on his truck and stole his briefcase and my son's football equipment out of the back seat. When he went back inside to report it and ask someone to call the police, he was told that "the police never catch these guys" and that this happens several times every month. Knowing this, their security consists of one of their employees walking out to the parking lot a couple of times a night.

I will never take any of my family back to this business for any reason. Attending a child's birthday party has cost us about $250 so far to repair damage to our vehicle and we are out several hundred dollars in stolen items. I don't care how fun the skating is, it's not worth what we've gone through.

Texas Rollergirls feel your pain...Get Your Roller Derby Fix

by 26ranches at Citysearch

Saturday, December 1: Texecutioners vs Mu?ecas Muertas

Derby addicts, have you felt sad and empty since the Texas Shootout? Do you find yourself obsessing over knee pads and fishnets? Do you walk around aimlessly, marking days off the calendar and counting the endless stretches of time until you can get that next derby fix? Then you, my friends, are suffering from a serious case of derby withdrawal. Luckily for you, Texas Rollergirls feel your pain and are ready and eager to satisfy your cravings with an all-star bout against Duke City's Mu?ecas Muertas.

Belly on up to Playland, Saturday, December 1st, to get your shot of pure, hard-core derby--Texecutioner style. These third-in-the-nation skating machines are revved up to take on Albuquerque, New Mexico's finest dolls on 8 wheels. In a departure from usual Texas Rollergirls style, doors open at 7:30, and game night is on Saturday, so no excuses for missing the all-star afterparty (unless you've got to get to church early the next morning).

As a special treat, you true derbyholics get to satisfy your derby jones for free if you bring your 2007 Pack badge. This one's on the house--cuz that's how we roll.

Date: Saturday, Dec 1

Time: Doors @ 7:30 p.m.

Good Space, Bad Tunes

by platkat at Citysearch

I'm really glad there's a rink in town that has adult skate night, even though they recently jacked up their price for admission. The rink itself is decent, but they play the same songs every week, so it gets kind of boring. I don't mind 80s music, but there's some garbage mixed in with it. They could try replacing the garbage with some good modern rock or electronic music. (Not into the lewd R&B or sappy ballads either.) Oh yeah, and they took out the tetris arcade game--NOT COOL!!

  • Pros: Adult Skate
  • Cons: Crustilicious Music, Lack of Tetris

Good but could use improvement

by TheRowan at Citysearch

This is the best of the rinks in Austin (and surrounding area) I was kind of dissappointed in the diversity of music. It has a fairly large skate area, which is also used for roller hockey and bingo center. I think this place would been 100% if the floors were professionally done regularly as the floor gets flooded from time to time and has cracks.

  • Pros: Adult Night, Large Floor, Decent Light Effects
  • Cons: Floor has cracks, Music isn't diverse, Building is run-down
