Rudy's All Day (and night) Long!!.
I am in the Air Force flying the C-17, and I have been flying worldwide for 36 years. Needless to say I have been all over experiencing cuisine from all corners of the earth. When it comes to BBQ,
there is NONE better than Rudy's. I met some of the partners several years ago, and I see them every year catering at Airs Shows. I got from them a couple of really cool ideas on how they do their smoking. These people have it DOWN! I just love it when I get to Texas to eat at a Rudy's since we don't have them here in Ca.
Trust me......I know BBQ and Rudy's has it going on.
El Paso Air Show in 2011 for my 5th year in a row with the Rudy's people!!
God Bless Texas...and Rudy's!…
Great dancing.
So its Saturday night and baby's got to dance. We head out to Rudy's Salsa night and boy does it surprise.
Even though we arrived close to midnight the dancing hadn't even started yet. As it looked like the tradition was to start with food, we ordered. For me, the vegetarian, that consisted of bread and coleslaw, not very good for my snake hips.
We soon got back to our feet and where first on the dance floor - starting with the Cha-cha-chá, merengue and then finally a conga line round the whole BBQ. People where clapping, wooping and cheering us on. I've never been so welcomed in my life.
Go do Rudy's for the best Cuban Salsa around!…
Waaaay Overrated. There are many many places around Austin that are waaaaay better than Rudy's. Don't buy into the hype. Head to Salt Lick or Ironworks instead.
Great sauce, creamed corn and more.
Ok, for a place connected to gas stations - heck anywhere - this is just really good food.
You walk in past the convenience store and into a long line where you pick up drinks and any cold side dished (I highly recoemmend the banana pudding).
When you go to the counter make sure to tell them it is your first time in. Trust me.
They offer the standard Texas meats and cut them to order and put them in their fanct plates and platter (wax paper and a milk crate). The juicy brisket and lean brisket are great, turkey can be dry but when it isn't it is fantastic. They also offer one of the better sausages in town (for some reason most places oversmoke their links, gross). Not a fan of the prime rib meat, skip that one. The creamed corn is so good you want to slapp your momma for what she used to serve. They'll eye you and toss 1/2 a loaf of white bread in there too(more if you ask).
You take your crate to a picnic bench where paper towels and BBQ sauce to make sanwhiches or eat how you like. The sauce is excellent. Honestly it is my favorite in Austin - now if I can only sneak some into Salt Lick...that would be perfect). Overall the meat is cooked pretty good (not the best in town but very good) but the sauce and side are solid and make for agreat meal.
Clean up after yourself and then fill the tank up.
One of my favorite places in Austin, you can't go wrong.…
