In Short – This 307-foot structure rivals the Capitol as the tallest structure in Austin. It's one of the few local places where sightseers can view of downtown on one side and Hill Country on the other. The tower's observation deck gained national attention when Charles Whitman stood on it to shoot 16 people in 1966. After students jumped from it in 1974, the deck closed until the University installed a stainless steel cage around it in 1999.
