Laura, their groomer, is the best I've ever come across. She is amazingly affordable and my dogs always looked forward to going to see her.

I have never been happier – I have been to other vet practices and I must say, I will NEVER go anywhere else. Westgate Pet & Bird cares about you and your pet. I have been with Westgate for several years now and they have held my hand through the first months of a new puppy, to the loss of our family cat.

The staff is always friendly and they know my face, if not my name. The doctors I have seen have always been very helpful in explaining (in language I understand) what type of treatment my pet needed and ALL the different options, both positive and negatives.

Westgate is just like my child's pediatrician...I know if I had a question or emergency, they would be there for me and my pet.

after 10 years – I've been going to Westgate Pet & Bird since 2002 when I moved to south austin. They were recommended by my previous vet as one of the best in town for all around dog care and I could not be happier with the care they have provided over the years.

I have seen every Westgate vet and most technicians over the years as they have helped my two Blue Heelers through routine checkups and routine and emergency treatment for everything from fleas, dog bites, epilepsy, blindness, cancer, ACL surgeries, collapsed lung, cushings, ingesting various weird things and some stuff I can't even remember. What I will always remember is that this clinic always treat my dearest pets and I with respect when it came to their care.

Sometimes I have had to wait while animals with more pressing medical conditions were cared for or owners were consoled about the loss of their dearest pet . I am not bothered by this and rather think it speaks volumes for dedication and compassion. Several of my friends that go there now after my recommendation say they do pay more for some services but find them to be worth it. The front desk has always priced matched products if I found them elsewhere. I don't have a problem with the fact that they are still a business and must be profitable to continue to provide the wonderful service they do.

In particular I would be remiss if I didn't mention Dr. Ginger Davis and Vet Tech Jenn Delvecchio. While all of the doctors and staff have been wonderful over the years, these two incredible people continually go above and beyond what I could ever expect as my two dogs have aged. Dr. Davis' approach to pain management, willingness to listen to my observations and concerns and come up solutions to allow two very old dogs (15&16 yrs) live comfortable and active lives.

When the time came to put one of my dear pets to sleep, again Dr. Davis was there with good sound advice and true sympathy both for me and my pet. As my other dog now requires biweekly adequan injections as it's simply no longer practical to transport them this often Jenn was quick to offer her services and make house calls after work and on weekends.

Over the years most of my friends have switched to Dr. Davis and the folks at Westgate Pet and Bird at my recommendation and all are happy they did.

I recognize selecting a vet and clinic is a personal thing and no one shoe fits all but for me Dr. Davis and the folks at Westgate have been awesome!

Westgate Pet & Bird Hospital – Please note that the 4 stars they presently get DO NOT REFLECT THE LAST 2YEARS, most of their good star ratings were before 2008. I can not review before 2008 though I can rate for the last 2 years.

1. They charge top $ for over the counter and prescription medications.

2. Pet care bills 2.5 times more expensive than the previous vet.

3. Make sure you have a good 2 hours or more as you wait forever, you would expect paying top $ you would at least be seen within 20 minutes of your appointment.

I'm looking for another vet, references greatly received.

The BEST care for your pets!!! – In regards to the previous comment...

So, the fact that they brought you an estimate is proof that all they care about is money? To me, that sounds like a good business, especially since a majority of pet owners don't have pet insurance. Would you rather have had them run up a $1000 bill before talking to you about how much treatment was going to cost? From what I understand about the parvo virus, it can be deadly, despite treatment, but it also a disease that easily preventable with proper vaccinations! Just because you are angry and upset with yourself, doesn't give you the right to slander an awesome business like Westgate Pet and Bird Hospital.

Seriously, look at past reviews. I myself, have taken ALL of my pets here for years and have always been more than pleased with their services. They have 3 absolutely wonderful doctors on staff that I trust to take care of all my pet's needs at anytime.

reply review – yes the fact that they brought me an estimate does show they only care about the money. i dont know how you feel about your dogs,but my dogs are members of my family. i rather they ring me up a bill of 2000-2500$ (which is what i was quoted) over my dogs life. Parvo IS a deadly virus, and my dog DID have her vaccinations. which is why the staff was so shocked at the fact she was still positive. I am angry at the fact they took hrs before any type of treatment was administered to my dog. time which could of helped save her life.i feel my review was reasonable and i stick by my review 100%. not only will i not bring my dogs there ever again, but i will NEVER recommend the westgate pet & bird hospital to anyone else. fortunately for me i speak to a lot of clients in my line of work. I LOVE MY DOGS, when it comes to their life money is not a problem. once again i dont know how you feel about your dogs, but i feel sorry for them because i get the impression YOU rather SAVE A BUCK than to SAVE A LIFE.

Pet Birds – I am curious as to the name of the hospital.....Westgate Pet and Bird Hospital, it sounds as though birds are not "pets" but creatures in need of hospital care.

This is a big turn-off to me. My bird is my pet and wish for him to be referred to as such.

BIG, BIG PROBLEM AS FOR A I AM CONCERNED. Also noted that none of the comments seemed to come from bird owners.

Caring doctors AND staff – I've been taking my furry loved one to this vet since she was a wee one. I've seen the front desk service, techs, and doctors get better and better over the years. The front office staff consistently greets me by name with a smile at the ready. They honestly seems to love their jobs and never fail to make me feel as though they care about my cat as much as I do. Westgate has some of the greatest "bee-charming" techs I've ever seen. My cat can be a handful but the vet techs (Amy, Jen and William just to name a few) handle her with a gentle grace that puts me at ease. I couldn't ask for a better group of doctors--ones that genuinely care about their patient's health and doing right by the owner. Dr. Davis and Dr. Lusk have treated my cat with a kind of dedication only a handful of physicians exhibit these days. I hope to continue entrusting my cat's care to them for many years to come.

Spare no Expense, Bait and Switch – I must admit, I had my doubts when my wife told me we were going to change to this vet. I saw the nice location of their office what with all of the parking available and a reasonable new building and I just knew that their overhead costs would be reflected in my billing. See, medical and veterinarian care specialists have developed this attitude that "spare no expense" should apply to more than life threatening conditions. Things like teeth cleaning and simple checkups should be exorbitantly high priced because customers will pay to be sure that their animal is getting the best treatment. Now up until today, I had not dealt directly with this office as my wife usually takes care of this area. After today, I won't deal with them, ever again. We had an estimate done for services to our animals about two weeks ago. The estimate was printed out and I brought that with me upon dropping the animals off. I was told by the technician that the estimate was "probably no good" and then got to sit there for 20 minutes while he came up with a new estimate which, of course, was higher than the original. These people even have a "permission slip" asking what dollar amount you are comfortable overshooting your estimate by. Good thing I put $50.00 there because I received a phone call stating that the estimate had DOUBLED less than 2 hours after dropping off my animals. Apparently, there are different levels of service involved with certain procedures and the vet decided that my animal needed a higher level of service. I graciously declined and asked that the vet perform the service orginally agreed to. I was told that they would need to check to see if that was OK!! OK?! When I told them I'd come get the animal immediately, I was told that they would give me a call right back. When they did call, it was as if everything was forgotten. So, I guess they get a lot of customers with the old bait and switch here. If this happens to you, stay strong and let them know who is in charge.

Customer for Fifteen Years... I'm Done With This Place – I have been going to this vet for well over ten years... since before Austin was California. They have treated a cat for cancer, removed a tumor from a pet rodent, put that same pet rodent to sleep a few years later, removed another cat's abscessed teeth, and various other pets and procedures. That being said, I feel that this area has grown more quickly than they can keep up with serving it. Every time I go now it's like a brand new day... I have seen all of these doctors AT LEAST once in the past decade + and they act like they've never heard of my cat's problems. I get a different vet every time who tells me something entirely different and wants to charge me out the a** for a million procedures. I am currently awaiting urine culture results on a sick cat and it has been nearly four days and no one can tell me anything... meanwhile, my cat continues to p*ss around the house. I am finally resolved to finding a new vet after all these years. They have just become too busy and impersonal and I feel lost in the shuffle. Not to say the staff and docs aren't nice, but the service is really cr*ppy for the price I pay. They have mixed up my cat with my two dogs, called me to hound me about paying for a procedure that I had already paid for but THEY forgot to enter in the system (I had a receipt they gave me the same day... don't know how they wound up with no record of it....) annoying cr*p that's just been piling up. With a sick and aging kitty, I can't afford this game any more.
