Simply Awesome !.
Great meal, great service ! Started off with a Almond Goat Cheese salad. It was very tasty but a little small (the right size for me, but not enough for two). Then, I tried the Shrimp Etoufee ... a little spicy for me, but delicious. Then, the best part, was the entree. I had the Redfish Almondine and loved it ! Also, try the Dirty Rice .. goes great with the redfish. Overall, fantastic ! ... I would recommend getting a booth.
ps... I did read some of the prior critics, and, yes, the parking attendants could be dressed nicer, i suppose (although i think they were fine) ... however, they are very attentive and hardworking (ran to get my car, opened both car doors, etc.)
this place was awful for my beloved wife and ive got to say goatmaster was right.
Even though this place is pricy i think 20 dollars for SOUP is umm lets say the worst!!!!!
me and my muffy are never going there again
Tad (Goatmaster) and Buffy should go back to Fantasy-ville on their private island.
If anyone reading gives any regard to goatmaster's review, then they should go off to live in Fantasy-ville as well. Is this even a serious review? I mean come on, the guy is outraged that the people in the establishment are wearing 'last-years fashions' and that his 'Buffy' didn't get to sit where they were accustomed to? What a crybaby, you sit where there is available space. They didn't mistreat him in any way, and his complaints were absent in what should really be the only two fields to comment on: The food, and the service. No complaints there, huh goatbaby? Well there's a reason, I've been to the establishment and they were both great.
I'm personally not a fashion expert. I didn't attend fashion school, I don't have personal shoppers and people dressing me every morning, and to be quite honest, I don't even watch E! So maybe I was one of his complaints. I couldn't quite tell you what season's clothes I was wearing. I guess that means I shouldn't be allowed to eat at a great restaurant. Well, at least according to Captain Snob. Fortunately, he doesn't run the place, so if you're like me and reasonably well mannered, hungry, and looking for a fantastic meal and good service, check out Gumbo's, it's definitely worth your time - assuming that your Bentley isn't in the garage and you're just too ashamed to be seen rolling up in your Benz.
Things I'd recommend:
The gumbo, obviously. My family is from Louisiana and I've had a lot of gumbo before, and Gumbo's, fittingly, has some of the best I've had in a restaurant.
The tenderloin St. Michael is fantastic. Beef cooked perfectly, and the sauces are great.
I have to agree with sinsu in saying that I will be hard pressed to ever again break bread at this once fine establishment, until I can receive assurances that a much stricter dress code will be enforced. Last Saturday evening, my darling wife and I were looking particularly elegant, when we decided that we must simply go out to see and be seen. Our drive went without incident, and our anticipation of another chic meal grew as we drew near the valet stand. As we pulled the Bentley alongside the curb, to our horror, a rather shoddily dressed valet approached the vehicle from my driver's side. Not only did he fail to open the door for my beloved Buffy, he left fingerprints on the front left area of the hood. I know that these valet types are used to parking people who are only able to afford Toyotas and Hondas, but more attention should be paid to preferred customers. And it didn't stop there. Sure, we were quite late for our reservation, but is that any excuse for the hostess to greet us wearing last year's fashion? I wouldn't normally complain, but she was wearing open toed shoes and her colors were not at all right for the season!! We had to wait nearly five minutes to be seated, and even then our favorite table was not available. Much to our dismay, we were instead seated much closer to the kitchen than what Buffy is accustomed. And as if that were not enough, there was a party seated not more than twenty yards from us that appeared to be drinking a bottle of wine that was not from the premium end of the wine list, if you know what I mean. I understand that many of the less fortunate are not able to afford all of the finest all of the time, but the gentlemen (if you can call them that) at this table were not even wearing dinner jackets, and one of them was wearing brown shoes with a black outfit. As I'm sure you can understand, we were quite embarrassed to be seen in this sort of company, and will not be frequenting Slumbo's in the near future.
What happened to this place?.
My very first review,
Firstly, Gumbo's is NOT cheap. A single dollar sign for price is funny. The wife and I have been eating here for years and I've never gotten out under a hundred bucks for dinner. So if thats cheap then I would hate to see a 4 dollar sign for price.
The food is outstanding, the wait staff is impeccable, I dare to say the best in Austin. You will want for nothing! Your glass will always be filled with water and if you drink they will have another one on your table before your first is empty. To me thats service. This is one reason why I have always come back and taken friends here that are visiting from out of town.
Why 2 stars then you ask? At one time Gumbo's was place to dress up and start out your evening. I would wear slacks and a dress shirt (long sleeve) my wife in a pant suit or dress. We recently visited Gumbo's on a saturday night with friends and everything was as expected. We were seated, the waiter was on us in a flash, welcomed us to the resturant took our drink order and was away. We settled in and then I saw it.....The table or party rather next to us were in flip flops and baseball caps. I then glanced around the dinning room and this was the norm. I would say half of the patrons were in some sort of T-shirt and or tennis shoes, I was appauled.
Im not a snob by any means and everything has it place it the world. What gets me angry is if your going to pay for valet parking, shell out 100 or more dollars on a meal (for 2) why would you want to be surround by a "Chili's" Crowd? Perhaps I expect a bit too much now days, but what happened to dressing up and going out? You could do it at Gumbo's but not anymore Im afraid. Its just sad to see a nice place go down like this. I felt cheated, after paying over 300 dollars that evening on dinner. I think next time we will eat at Mccormick and Schmick or Ruths Chris, dont think they will let you in with flip flops.
Shame on you!
Outstanding food.. Outstanding food. Pricey as would be expected. All meals are excellent from what I have seen. This place is not cheap, (not terrible either) - but you get large portions. Order a few sides. I suggest getting the cheaper (about $20) fish entrees and then getting a few sides. You wil not be able to eat everything. The chief cook is very talented. Went with my parents for an anniversary. My mother is a total food snob, has been trained in Paris on cooking, and will complain about anything. She was impressed. This is not a place which will make you wait around for hours for a table, and then want you to buy drinks until then. This is a top-grade *restaurant*. If you want a bar, right next door is Brown Bar where you can wait. Also a good place - and not too expensive. Perhaps the best place in Austin to eat. I have been to Vespiao which everyone raves about (a different fare of course) - but i would say this is better food - and also a better deal.
THE BEST SEAFOOD IN AUSTIN!!. Here I am writing to say how wonderful this place is!! I enjoyed the evening with my husband and it was our anniversary. We started with some good wine and the snails were out of this world..the salads also was tasty ......I enjoyed the pears in the salad. I truly enjoyed our waiter very attentive. We loved the ambiance and booths are very private for that special day.I LOVED THE DISHES WE ORDERED.......WAS INCREDIBLE. This is one of my very favorite places. Thank you Gumbo's for such great service and making my day so special@!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Classy place. Very nice, high class place with good selection of wines and other drinks. A bit hard on the wallet but for a special occasion you can't pass this one up. I agree about no valet, major let down there. Food and service top notch.
Save Room for Chocolate Custard. Despite all the wonderful restaurants in Austin, Gumbo's always wins out whenever my husband and I go out for a nice dinner. The fish is always perfectly prepared with the richest sauces and stuffings. And the tenderloin will LITERALLY melt in your mouth. The "Gumbo" rocks. And even if I have to stuff myself sick, I never leave without getting the chocolate custard for dessert...to die for! Oh -- and if the terrific food isn't enough -- the service has been top-notch every single visit....attentive without being annoying. Love it love it love it...
Great upscale restaurant for the downtown crowd.
Never been disappointed with the outstanding service and the unique specials. Generous portion sizes, especially blackened filet mignon and potato-encrusted redfish. Great wine selection and nice ambience. We enjoyed the crabcakes--not necessarily better than elsewhere but different from what's served at Louie's 106 or Eddie V's.
It is pricey...we spent $123 WITH $25 off coupon (one appetizer, two entrees, four glasses wine, one cappaccino), but life's too short to eat lousy food and drink cheap wine. 20% tip automatically added to bill, which was surprise just for two people. 20% tip is normal for us for good service, but I'd rather be in charge of that--especially if the service wasn't that great.
Dressy, professional crowd seems to be the market--we didn't notice any "snooty" types, as someone else mentioned, which suggests that the flip-flop wearing, raggy jeans and t-shirt/6th street regular might find this fine restaurant a bit "uppity."
