Velvet Rope Nonsense. I love the Fez and everything inside, but dealing with the attitude at the door on weekends is a big turn-off. The doormen put up a velvet rope and make people wait...and wait on line (regardless of the amount of people inside) UNLESS you pony up $10 or bribe the doorman to get in. And this isn't just some discreet gesture to cut in front--the doorman will announce this optional "service" aloud. If you ask me this is TACKY. I mean, cmon, this isn't L.A. Until they think about their door policy, We're off to other destinations on the weekends.
Fez-the Longest Line in Town. Heading east on fifth you see the sign and notice the mass of people "the Red Fez" Austins most Tantalizing Bar. Whats going on inside? -D.J.s', chicks, bass, girls, alchohol, and ladies. What else does one need to have a great time!
Shriners Beware. Not a hang out for old Shriners. The decor is awesome. Tables are styled somewhere between early-German-torture and neo-chic. A very trippy place to lounge. Shiva the Destroyer gives it four thumbs up!
Fun at the Fez. Bartenders are always nice and friendly. Gets a bit crowded, but it makes for great energy. Drinks are a bit expensive, but if you complain about drink prices you should not spend your money on alcohol in the first place. I have never had a bad experience here, and the door guys are always very polite. Don't really understand any of the low marks that people give this place...the Fez is great!
Good Night;"Arabian Nights". The Arabian Nights co-hosted by WMDproductions was the real deal. I introduced myself to the producer of the this night. The music was hip from the Middle East and the bellydancing music was enjoyable as were the bellydancers. You could tell the bellydancers were classically trained and not the usual American Bellydancer. Good place to start your evening or end if you have had dinner earlier.
No parking on the dance floor.
Red Fez does not let off immediately quite how cool the bar can be, but if you're into music from latin-euro to Hip-Hop, you'll dig this mixed mash of hopping beats. The blue lighting at the bars makes for a good ambience and there are definitely young singles grooving, waiting in the wings and sometimes lurking (on bad nights).
What I love most is the dance floor positioned in front by the dj. It's non-descript indeed, but can turn into one of the best "no parking zones" in austin if the crowd gets into the music. There is always this in sinc beat moving between the happy souls who dare to show their stuff on that floor.
