Old dog, new cliques: The Driskill Bar may be historical, but they do a wonderful job of hauling in the young guns too. Case in point: Their guest mixologist nights, like the recent one they did for the Mad Men Season 6 premiere. Jason Stevens from Bar Congress did a five (!) course cocktail tasting for guests, with '60s inspired drinks -- and apparently, '60s inspired drinking ability.
Excellent Hotel.
One of my friends recently had a bachelor party in Austin. We're a little older now so decided instead of a vegas style trip to do something a bit more fitting.
We stayed at the Driskill for the weekend and although it was a hard weekend, it was nice to come back to stay somewhere clean, quiet and nice.
Also, their restaurant downstairs has great hangover breakfast!
Fun to Hang after Work. Some work friends and I have found this to be a great alternative to sitting in traffic. A little upscale and possibly snotty, but safe, clean, comfortable and not too loud unless you get close to the piano when someone is playing background elevator tunes. A good place to be in a bar scene, without going into a bar...kind of.
Historic downtown hotel bar feels like retiring to a wealthy rancher's drawing room..
In Short
Lean against the carousel-shaped bar and it's as if you've stepped back in time to an era of cattle barons, cigar-puffing politicos and oil-patch wildcatters. Completing the theme are lots of dark wood, mounted Longhorn heads, cowhide couches, a pressed-tin ceiling, Western-themed paintings and bronzes, and a carpet woven with famous cattle brands. Topping it all off is a huge, Tiffany-style stained-glass dome in the center of the room.
Too many cows. I love Texas, don't get me wrong, but this place is just too over the top for me. There are too many Texas decorations, including some iron statues that I can't really figure out. The crowd is overly subdued also, and I just never feel comfortable there.
Classic cocktail lounge. Very nice atmosphere but geared up for over 50 crowd.
Just great cocktails.... Its a great place to sit back and relax on comfy chairs or sofas. The cocktails are superb as well. This place is perfect for after work unwinding. The only thing missing is a speedier waitstaff, I usually go order my drinks from the bartender directly.
