Editorial Review for Zilker Botanical Gardens – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
More than 300,000 people a year visit these sprawling grounds on the south bank of the Colorado River. Each of the eight gardens has a theme, such as the Isamu Taniguchi Oriental Garden with a Japanese Teahouse and "Bridge to Walk Over the Moon," and the Hartman Prehistoric Garden, where dinosaur remains were discovered. The open-air pavilion in its center provides a view of the downtown Austin skyline.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Although they seem like the perfect place for a picnic, you can't bring food into the gardens.

The Extras

For mementos, visitors can stop by the Chrysalis gift shop, which stocks T-shirts, stationery, toys and books.

Parking

Park at either the Botanical Garden parking lot or off Stratford Drive, below the MOPAC Bridge. The lot is open 7am to 6pm; any vehicles left after that will be locked in.

This was a neat attraction. We went there on Sunday afternoon. There are beautifully landscaped areas. Lots of animals (squirrels, birds, etc.) and there is the Mother of all Aloe plants there. I took my picture by it! I'm 5'6" and it was a good 6-8 inches taller than I and about 5'wide.

Especially enjoy the new Prehistoric Garden and dinosaur tracks. The lovely ponds/waterways alone are worth a visit. A most pleasant walk.

Pros: Nice downtown views, Trails/Shade, Free!!!

Cons: Noise from Mopac
