Austin >Mother Egan's Irish Pub
Confession: The last big, collective event I experienced at Mother Egan's was the 2008 presidential election, and ever since it closed in 2010, I've missed it dearly. This is less than a tip than an homage to a bar that I wish would come back someday, a Sixth Street Bar that didn't feel like Sixth Street -- i.e., one with bad music and dollar shots -- but rather, like a reliable nighttime companion who kept the light on for you and coaxed you back home. Rest in peace, Mother Egan's.
Just a note on being LGBT friendly.
Tried posting this as a comment to the discrimination review, but it was a little wordy. So, here it is as a separate review for all to enjoy.
First off, I know quite a few lesbian friends and none of them go into the same stall together. I even asked them. One of them reminded me that the ladies can't use the same toilet at the same time like the men, if you know what I mean.
Y'all were having a nice date, you had a few drinks and you hooked up in the stall. I'm not even going to pretend I haven't done the same thing so I'm not judging. HOWEVER, they could have called the cops on you and THEY probably would have put you in jail for the night for PI.
I've been going to Mother Egan's for YEARS. I've been on first dates there and I've seen first dates there, both straight and LGBT. No one judges and I've never once felt uncomfortable or unwanted (Ward aside, but that wasn't because I'm gay). Will, Grant and just about everyone who has ever worked there learned some really nasty things as a result of conversations I've had there. They never even asked me to keep it down when I was getting really loud one time talking about a show I wanted to do about felch*ng.
If you felt soo wronged, why didn't you stop payment on the charge?
The progression of civil rights? You're sh*tting me, right?
Discrimination. I am writing and I hope everyone will take the time to read this. I am a 23 year old honors college student who happens to be a lesbian. After watching the bats on Congress Bridge with my girlfriend, we were looking for a cool, chill place to get some food and have a few drinks. We walked into Mother Egan's, never having been there. After eating and having a few drinks, I asked the waitress to please close my tab. She brought me my tab, whic was $57.00 and chage. I put my card in the slot and waited for her to come back for it. After she did not come back for some time, I decided I had to go to the bathroom. My girlfriend did as well. We took the card back and walked to the bathroom together and went in the same stall. This is a common occurrence among women. Girls go into the same stall all the time. While we were in there, the manager came in and said, "Ya'll have 5 minutes to finish up." We were confused. When we walked out of the bathroom, he handed us a new ticket with an additional charge added onto it. It said in all capital letters F*CKING IN THE GIRLS BATHROOM $25.00. This is an absolutely ludicrous charge, and when we inquired about it our waitress said, referring to me, "She looks like a man so we could get into a lot of trouble for that." This remark and the charge is absolutely discriminatory. Based on the way I look, I was treated unfairly. Had it been two girls wearing dresses going into the bathroom, there would have been no such treatment. Please stay away from Mother Egan's Irish Pub. It is a toxic restaurant for the progression of civil rights. Thank you.
Best Irish Pub In Austin.
I have been a regular at ME for about 5 years. I am Irish and have been to the home country several times.
ME is as close to a real Irish, neighborhood pub as Austin has.
Will, Ward and Grant all do a fabulous job of knowing your name, your drink and provide great service with a earnest touch.
Come as you are and you will have a great time.
Best Pub in Austin. I've been a regular at this Pub for 3 years now-- the reason I return time and time again is largely in part b/c of the phenomenal staff there. They are super fun, friendly, and definitely remember their patrons & said patrons' drinks of choice. I've never been overcharged or made to feel less than a highly valued customer. Ward & Grant are fantastic, making some of the most delicious drinks in town (I'm not kidding- they actually have the BEST cosmos in Austin-- something you wouldn't necessarily expect at an Irish Pub!) In addition, Grant goes out of his way to find some of the best musical talent in Austin to bring to the Pub. Many nights you can find fantastic music there for free! Definitely a spot to check out.
OVERPRICED. Great spot until Grant overcharged us on domestic drinks. $3.50 for a 12 ounce Lonestar is the most I've ever paid. Sunday night with no entertainment, this is the worst Austin bar experience I've had in a VERY long time. Congrats, House of Blues Houston and Mother Egans shares similiar pricing. Never going back.
Looking better all the time.... Mother Egan's has been a watering hole of mine for years now, but lately I've found myself wondering, "What are they gonna do next?" Just yesterday I ordered off the new menu, opting for the new Smithwick's battered fish and chips while my friend devoured the chicken farfalle. The A/C was wonderful; thank God they finally got it working again. A quaint little drink menu includes a few original drinks such as the Irish Bulldog and the Clonakilty. I remember when Mother Egan's was more like a draft of stale second-hand smoke than the breath of fresh air its been lately. The service has improved, especially on weekends, which is nice cause the overflow from the "Are you Gellin?" bars across the street demands attention. Johnny Maginis and an adorably handsome redhead served us with an attitude me and my girls love on a friday night . And last but not least, has anyone been to trivia lately? Ward's the host and he writes the questions, what else can you ask for? How bout Johnny behind the bar playing sidekick? And the music! Im off for a pint
Best Local Bar Best Staff Downtown. The west side is becoming quite the hotspot for trendy hipsters. So if you are looking to press the flesh you will have plenty of places to choose from. However, if you are looking for good food, great service, and place to relax and enjoy yourself without worrying about ?Chris- Chris? and his ego driven buddies bugging you, this is your place. The new evening menu is excellent and the drink prices are great. A 20oz. beer for $4-$5 can?t be beat. The staff can come off a little brash at first but hey, remember this is an Irish Pub. Overall, the service it great.
Below Par Customer Service. My experience at this pub was TERRIBLE. Due mostly in part to the service. I didn't really catch my server's name because he seemed too busy running around franticly and yelling at the other waitresses, but he had short red hair styled with horrific sideburns, oh and i think he was wearing cowboy boots (great choice for an Irish pub?). He was rather unfriendly and seemed completely disorganized when it came to paying attention to the tables he was supposed to be waiting on. Also we could see him rudely barking orders at the other girls working there which seemed very unprofessional because we witnessed this right from our table about 5 feet away from the bar area. Overall, I would not recommend Mother Egan's to anyone I know. Why go somewhere and pay not only for overpriced beer but also for a snooty waiter and terrible service. Maybe If they fired this guy, I would consider going back for a better experience.
Best Place for Good Beer and Great Conversation.
I've been to Egan's several times and just love the place. If you are looking for a home away from home that just happens to have great beer on tap and even better conversation from the staff...this is the place for you. They have this bartender named Ward...he'll have you laughing so hard you'll wish the bathrooms were a little closer. (He's deep into sarcasm). The whole staff is very welcoming and will chat with you to make you feel at home. (But if you're a tool or muppet, they'll let you know it.)
The place seems to bring in a more professional crowd that prefers solid conversation to a meat market. That being said, it brings in the normal crowd on the weekend that are all looking for negotiable affections...but nothing like the other bars in the area.
The food was good and the bartender told me that they will be serving more upscale food as nightly specials soon. Good to see they are going with the upscale theme of the area.
