In Short – Named for a UT teacher and director, this 500-seat theater is now used for theater and dance student productions. Performances have included New Works Festival pieces plus "The Crucible" and UT's Dance Repertory Theatre, and interdisciplinary performance group Sharir+Bustamante Danceworks occupies the large theater space regularly. Payne Theatre also has hosted Houston's Alley Theatre, the National Theatre of the Deaf and the 1999 world premiere of Tennessee Williams' "Spring Storm."

The theatre's namesake lived from 1881 to 1976. Ben Iden Payne founded the repertory theater movement in England and the United States, "discovering" renowned actor John Barrymore and directing him in "Justice" (1916), and forming the first drama department at a major U.S. university. As a UT professor (1946-1971), Shakespearean scholar Payne directed 24 of the Bard's plays.
