Two words: Banh Xeo. These are Vietnamese crepes made with rice flour and coconut milk, and stuffed with bean sprouts, mushrooms, tofu and shrimp. These rolls leaves deliver a rich, oily coating to the inside of your mouth on the first bite, with the vegetable interior providing a bright contrast.
Favorite!!. The food here is wonderful. So good that I do not care about the poor service. It's worth it to me, to wait a few extra minutes for water b/c the food is so delicious. (even though my mouth is usually on fire!) The person that took me there the first time explained that the service was not the best so I wasn't expecting much. I recommend the Lemongrass Beef or the Shaken Beef. They have the best Imperial rolls as well.
the best bunh!. we love this place. you can't beat the value and the bunh is the best! we lived in chicago next to little vietnam and this place is better than any there. they have several vegetarian bunhs to choose from, i had one with black-eyed peas - YUM! i think i know what i'm having for dinner tonight!!
Don't Waste Your Time.
I was a regular at this place before it started changing the portion sizes and raising the prices. Not to mention the fact that you have to ask for anything extra like sugar for your tea, hot sauce, etc. The place has become dirtier, just take a look at the ceiling and floor.
My most recent visit was for lunch with my daughter and toddler. It was a disaster. The order was totaling wrong, my meal then came and the toddler began sharing while waiting for the original order to be started. The only consolation was they did not charge for my meal after I returned it because it sat in front of me getting cold while waiting for my daughters order.
Service has gotten worse, and the food portions have changed. Don't waste your time here. There are better choices around town.
Good food......excellent taste!!!.
Good restaurant. Very good food. Everytime I go the food tastes better n better!!!!
Need to improve service, not always do they lack but sometimes it is slow.
questionable cleanliness and bad service. My two recent experiences with this restaurant have been disappointing. During my most recent visit, the restaurant was full and I was told by the waitress to wait for a table that was about to leave. When that table was cleaned, the owner told me to wait for another table so she could seat a party that came in after I did. After I mentioned what the waitress had said, she informed me that she's the owner and that that her words trumped what the waitress had previously told me. This is not good customer service. On a prior occassion I found a piece of plastic wrap in my chicken noodle soup. I looked up the restaurant inspection scores on the city of Austin website. The restaurant scored 75 for its last inspection (70 is the minimum passing grade). The restaurant scored 59 at the end of 2006. I would not recommend this restaurant for its bad service and questionable cleanliness.
FRESH AND AUTHENTIC. Real fresh and authentic, good food, service was ok, not all that great but the food and prices made up for it. The location is great and there is always parking. The trays were they put the rice paper rolls need to be updated they are a horrible shade of pink and al broken
Love it!. Amazing food! From the look of the place, you would never guess the quality and freshness of the food would be top notch. The service is a bit slow, so just order their fantastic spring rolls and snack on those till the main dishes arrive. My only other complaint is that it is so far north. It's worth the drive though!
SAME EVERY TIME. I eat here at least once every 2 weeks for weekend lunch or weekday dinner. I have tryed almost there whole menu and everything is so good!!! Its a little hole in the wall and they really know how to make it fantastic everytime. Try the Vietnamese crepe for a appetizer followed by Seafood Claypot!!!!! MMMmmmm. I so think they should open another one or do away with that "game room" next door and expand the place. Hats off to Sunflower.
best Vietnamese food anywhere, hands down. I wouldn't worry about the 'lack of service' at this place. The food makes up for everything. It's run by a very busy woman, and she does nearly all the table-waiting and phone-answering etc.. so no, she does not hover over you making sure you're ok 10 times thoughout your meal. She's a very sweet lady who always, surprisingly, remembers my order. The curry tofu vermicelli is, simply put, the single best dish on the planet. No kidding. You have to try it. (It also comes in chicken, if you're not a tofu eater.) The other, competing place on Lamar which offers the same dish is nowhere NEAR as good as Sunflower's. My only complaint is in the way they spray windex on the tables to clean them, which I don't like happening right next to where I'm eating. (but I'm probably the only one who lets this bother me).. If only I could figure out the recipe to this coconut curry sauce the way Sunflower does it.!
Great vietnamese at reasonable prices; mediocre service. As previous reviewers have stated, the food here is great and the prices very reasonable but the service is mediocre. Its not bad -- they have never been in any way rude -- its just not as attentive or fast as some other restaurants. This doesnt bother me at all, but if slow or unattentive service really annoy you, this might not be your place. If, however, you are just looking for tasty and (I think) authentic Vietnamese food at a great price, I highly recommend this restaurant.
