In Short – Kenichi is nothing if not a scene. Couples on dates and small groups of business folks, and Austin hipsters make up the clientele, and everyone is dressed to the nines. The contemporary Japanese interior features some great details, like minimalist Japanese ceramics on the tables and sprays of wild grasses separating the sushi bar from the dining room. The Aspen roll, with smoked trout, cream cheese and daikon sprouts is a favorite.

Editor's Tips

What to Drink:
Kenichi tempts with more than 20 different kinds of sake, some served warm, some cold. You'll see many a patron (including the likes of Sandra Bullock and Lance Armstrong) doing sake bombs.
When to Go:
Stop in for happy hour every Tuesday through Friday 4:30pm until 6:30pm and Sunday through Monday 4:30pm until 10pm.

Terrible service

by cassasauresrex at Citysearch

I would not come back here.

My boyfriend made reservations for us and when we got there the place was empty except for a few other couples and they sat us in the back by the drink and plate station for the servers.

So the whole time the servers were hanging out right next to our table, talking about how annoying their tables were.

Our server, who only had 1 other table, was very nice but very slow. and the hostess barely even greeted us when we walked in. We told her we had reservations and then she just stood there and finished her conversation with another employee before she said anything to us.

The food was really good. And the Vegan tofu balls for dessert were amazing.

I probably wouldn't go back. Not worth the price.

good for downtown sushi

A little pricey for the quality of food, and the food is so-so. Also, the spice level isn't as consistent as I'd like. Two of is ordered the same dish with very different results.

The best dining experience I have ever had.

by Setiva at Citysearch

I don't write reviews very often but I felt it was deserved this time. I went to Kenichi for dinner last night and it was very busy. I had to wait a little bit but the maitre de was always in communication on the status of my table,( I did not even have a reservation). Ordered a cocktail and was given food recommendations by the bartender! Once I was seated my server was there immediately. I ordered the bartenders choice and was blown away, but before it came to the table a manager brought a coupple bites of a chef specialty and saiD thank you for coming in. Throughout the course of the meal everything was great. Table was clean, staff was informative and the manager checked how our dinner was before we were finished. They said goodbye on the way out even. I ran a restaurant for many years so I notice everything. I must say FLAWLESS!

Unprofessional Staff - Rude Hostess

by PoshGirl32 at Citysearch

Went to dinner at Kenichi on Saturday night. A very young hostess named Jenna is completely rude and unprofessional. She gossips about patrons and I never saw her greet anyone. She is very immature, and a terrible representative for this once trendy hot spot. The rest of the staff was fine, the bartender was great, the food was good and fast, but why have someone as awful as her in the front of the house, it just sets up the experience to be a bit of a dissapointment. Your staff's behavior makes a huge impact, especially with so many dinner options near by.

  • Pros: Good Drinks
  • Cons: Unprofessional Staff
