Editorial Review for Philosopher's Rock – by Tim Staley

In Short
The three men in the sculpture are J. Frank Dobie (1888-1964), author, newspaper columnist and University of Texas English professor; Roy Bedichek (1878-1959), author and naturalist; and Walter Prescott Webb (1888-1963), author, historian and University of Texas professor. The statue stands not only as a memorial to these three giants of Texas letters, but also as a symbol for the value of friendship, the joy of conversation and the beauty of nature, specifically Barton Springs.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

If you're wondering why Mr. Webb is wading in the water with his pants rolled up, he, unlike Dobie and Bedichek, did not like to swim.
