Best Homemade Salsa in town

by Mark Villalobos

ANd I do not exagerate. THE salssa is the best I have had in Round Rock to date. The food is average, the margaritas are good, but the salsa is teh BEST

great food and you get your moneys worth of it.

I live just down the street from Rio Grande and I usually get my order to go. I have had a variety of dishes from their menu and they are all excellent. Their salsa is a bit warm for me (I'm a whimp when it comes to hot sauce though) but it is very tasty. I highly recommend their fajitas.

Great 1st Stop

by rukus

I've been to the Rio several times in the last 2 years. I stop by for cheap snacks during Happy Hour or before a long night of bouncing around bars.

Let's get real with the last few reviews. Tex-Mex is simple. That's why it appeals to so many people. I've lived in Texas all of my life and eaten (and prepared) my share of Tex-Mex and throughout my experiences, I've learned it takes guts to do what the Rio is doing. Instead of overly-saucy enchiladas covered in mounts of cheese, I taste the corn tortillas and meat--not just sauce. I think the crab meat and shrimp ench is the way to go if you want something rich and buttery. As for the basics: Salsa always tastes fresh and gets the job done. I usually ask for the spicier stuff though. The flour tortillas are addictive-just like grandmas. They've added a mesquite wood-fired grill which is different and gives the meat a smokey flavor, which I think people aren't used to. Of course there are a couple things I don't like but I what I like best about this place is that they keep the simple things simple. Like guacamole. It's mashed avocados, salt, lime juice and garlic (I asked)--I taste avocado, not green mush with everything but the kitchen sink put in it.

I don't always like that tequilla is the only liquor, but hey: when in Rome... Margaritas are fine in the warm months, but I prefer to sip the better stuff "neat" when it's cold out. With something like 15 tequilas, the hardest part is choosing which one.

The staff is great for the most part. Somehow, through the chaos of a busy night, the servers never loose their warmth. They seem to be having a good time.

I think some of the reviewers need to relax--it's Tex-Mex. Sit back, grab a bite, drink, enjoy your company. Try something different--they have smoked chicken tacos and enchiladas and cheap knife-n-fork burritos. I recommend checking it out before long night out.

  • Pros: Great 1st stop and tasty happy hour eats.
  • Cons: I prefer my ritas in a pint glass---less likely to spill.
