My machine, which was taken to Laboratory Computers before, was blue screening and would not boot up. I took it back and they said they'd take care of it.
Long story short, I called them for an update every Thursday for a wait time of 5 weeks. At week three, they finally informed me that the motherboard needed replacing. At week 4, they said they were still looking for the motherboard. I was finally fed up. How difficult is it to order a motherboard?! So after all the bs, the problem was never fixed.
These guys are rude, anti-social, can't look you in the eyes, and assume all customers are idiots. I will never bother with them again. Word gets around, Laboratory Computers. Treat your customers like customers. I can not BELIEVE you're still in business.
Just not worth it.
A few years ago when I was a freshman in high school my parents bought for me what at the time was the second best computer money could buy for the purpose of playing video games. After carefully researching what I wanted, my father and I went there and told the fellow working there what we wanted, and just a few days later we came by to pick up the finished computer.
It worked well. For a while at least. The first issue I had was when I put a new game in the computer and at first everything was running just fine. Then after playing the game for about half an hour or so I'd hear this buzzing sound and the computer would completely lock up. It did this again, and again, and again until we took it back to Lab Computers. They looked at it, "You probably just have a virus."
"I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it's hardware or something."
"Well it's probably a virus, but we'll take a look at it."
It was the hardware. They actually made us a whole new computer and threw the other one out, free of charge.
One thing I couldn't help but notice with my new monster computer was that this thing was LOUD. I mean, this thing would whir and heat up the room like it was nobody's business. I lived with it though. I mean, it was 1700 dollars. Surely they only used the best materials, right?
Once again, we took the computer back. I told the guy that the computer was super loud and that as far as I know, a better case is in order. No, he says. That's not it. He plugged it in, ran it, and said that it was just the fan on the processor making a lot of noise. Whatever, I thought. I'll just deal with it.
Now about a year ago my graphics card died. I can't tell you the definitive cause, but I can almost assure you it had something to do with being cooped up in a sub-par case with no form of ventilation. Oh well, it was kind of old anyway. I went to Newegg and bought a super nice video card, installed it myself, and for a while, things were good.
That's when something (couldn't tell what it was at the time) started whirring really loudly. I shrugged, put a stapler on top of the case where the noises and vibrations where emanating from, and the problem seemed to stop.
That's when the computer just died. I mean the whole computer just shut down. I talked to a buddy and he told me that the power supply was probably out. Once again, I went to Newegg and bought a new power supply which supplied 650W. When I opened up the computer and took out the old power supply, it was pretty easy to conclude they had given me the cheapest one they could find. I then looked at the box of my new graphics card and saw that it required at LEAST 300 watts or something like that. Basically, the cheapo power supply just couldn't handle the new graphics card.
Just a few months ago, a friend of mine came over and noticed how loud and hot my computer was running. He said that it wasn't good and it probably fried my graphics card. What do I do now?
I simply run my computer with the side off and use a room fan to cool it. When the air hits it the computer it magically become as quiet as a shrew. Coincidence? I think not.
Right now I am about to wipe my computer. Certain games cause it to crash, it will NOT recognize Directx9.0c, meaning I can't play any new games, the case is a complete piece of junk, and right now I have some issue where error messages are popping whenever I open a program. It's only because of my smart friends and some resourceful thinking that this computer is up and running today.
Don't go to these guys. It's just a bad idea. I could see issues with the computer they couldn't see back when I was 15 years old. If you want a custom computer, I would recommend going to Dell or having your nerd friends help you build one. The only reason I'm giving these guys two starts instead of one is because my computer hasn't died outright.
If you're in the market for a customized computer this just isn't the place.
I gOt a Virus.
I received an email from my best friend. In the email they sent a link... to a greeting they made for me.
I opened the link and there was a "Warning"! but, I assumed it wasn't nothing since this email was from my best friend who worked on a computer all day long.
I clicked open, and my computer screen turned Black!
I was in the middle of a project, I also had my MySpace, Yahoo, and Facebook pages open.
My computer wouldn't let do a thing!
Now! I'm Freakin" OuT!!!
I remembered using "Labortory Computers" a few years ago. I also remember leaving with a smile...
So, with that, I went ahead and made the call.
Nick answers. Hey!!! That's the guy that helped me the last time!! He remembered me!!
While in panic and almost in tears, I explained what I did and what happened. Very calmly he said, "Just bring it in , we'll fix the problem".
That's all he had to say!
I proceeded to make the pilgrimage to North Austin from "Far SW" Austin in the middle of 5 o'clock traffic.
It was worth it....
My computer was ready in a couple of days.
At a "VERY REASONABLE " price! sigh.......
Now, I have the Ultimate Spyware and Virus Protection and I even got more memory! Yippee!!!!
I thank God for "Nick" and "Labortory Computers" for being there in my time of distress.
Nothing but problems problems problems.. After dropping $1200 on having them make a custom machine for me, I would have thought I would have gotten what I paid for. Not the case. They said the series of video card that I wanted would not be good, so they down-graded the card and said they'd hook me up with another gig of ram(which they didnt). The version of windows they installed was bootlegged making it so I cant upgrade select drivers (which isn't that illegal?!). The video card has a minimum requirement of 550W or higher power supply and they only installed a 380W, which they said is fine cuz that what they put in every machine they make. After the 380 overheated, they CHARGED me for the 550W (which even a higher watt would be better, but I was told 550's are the highest watt they keep in stock)! Apparently they know better than Nvidia! At the moment, I feel that my machine is nothing more than a glorified paperweight. Some people have told me that they are a great place to deal with but I dont know wtf they been smoking to think that! I dropped $1200 on a $500 machine that still doesnt even work. Thanks a whole f@#%ing lot, Laboratory. Unfortunately I have to give one star rating for this because there isnt anything less. Not recommended is just too nice of a comment for the experience I've had with this place.
Be aware that some reviews are just planted to cast doubt on other posters who have given a positive or negative review.
My experience with Laboratory Computers was not a good one. I ordered a Notebook and was put off every time I inquired about the time that the notebook would be ready. I was told that I would have it in a week but instead got it almost 4 weeks later. I was told by the employee that the hard drives kept failing and he had to order new ones. Well, the truth is that they do not actually build these systems. The purchase barbones or preconfigured systems from vendors like Morning Star out of San Jose. I later learned that the person who was working with me was fired due to theft. So, I can understand a bad employee messing up your business. But this is not the big problem. The big one happens when my notebook fails after about 3 months of use. Like a previous poster said before, they do not give money back. I was given a run around, blown off, ignored, etc. for Months- about 4 months. I gave them 1400 dollars and they simply acted like they didn't know who I was. I had already given them the system and still 4 months later nothing, no calls, updates or anything. Naturally I began to think I had just be scammed. It wasn't until I send an email to the owner that I get a response. I had to inform them that I was defrauded and would now be taking appropriate action. Well, sure enough the owner gives me a call. This guy was not at all friendly, understanding, upset by his employees actions - he was just defensive and would admit no wrong doing. After I give up and just say something like, " well my email was just to let you know what I am going to have to do..." the conversation softens on his part.
In the end I was told that I could not get a replacement computer until after he got his money back from the manufacture for the system. So, a couple of weeks later I get my system. Not Recommended.
Dishonest Diagnostic and not worth the effort going here. First of all, it took what seemed like forever(4 weeks) for me to get my laptop back. I went in to get my laptop checked and it turns out what they had told me was not true. They told me that I needed a motherboard which another place not far from this one told me the same thing. I spent money believing what their ad stated about doing a diagnostic and finding the problem, which was far from the truth. Once again I spent money at a place where customer service was bad and their diagnostics did not help or solve my problem. Waste of Money and Time.
Wow, I have no idea what these people are talking about.. I've seen the good people at laboratory computers for the past couple of years now, and they have been nothing but helpful. I am completely, totally, and utterly technologically challenged. I have asked Nick (the purportedly negligent owner) for tech support on innumerable occasions, both on the phone and in person, and the response has always been prompt, compassionate, and effective. Please go give them a chance before you waste your money, on overpriced inferior service.
DO NOT do business here!. I bought a laptop from these guys because they are a small local shop, the kind I like to support, and because they are near to my house. BIG MISTAKE! What makes them so bad...where to begin? I once waited in their shop and asked repeatedly for 45 minutes before being informed that the 5-hour long project I was scheduled to pick up never actually got started last week. Goodbye workday. When were they planning to tell me it would be another 5 hours? I've had a laptop from them for a year and a half. Actually, two laptops--I had to take the first one back, then they replaced it with one that was different from what I paid for. I just found out the second one didn't have the software disks included. I've had to "visit" them about once a month for 1.5 years because something was always going wrong. Sometimes they were nice, mostly they treated me like an idiot for not being a tech. When my girlfriend took pity on me and bought me a Mac, she went in to have them fix a problem on the PC they sold me, so she could sell it. Their words? "A Mac won't help-he screws up any computer he touches." These guys are unbelievable.
Incompetent jerks!. Incompetent; rude; arrogant! These are the three words that best describe the staff at Laboratory Computers. Don't be lured in by their seemingly cheap up-front rate, you will pay much more in the long run! I had to take my pc back three times and they still neglected to fix the problem. Not only that, but they refused to refund my money. In addition, they kept my pc for a tremendous amount of time and were impossible to contact. They preferred leaving me completely in the dark! Don't make the same mistake I did, stay clear of this place!
BEWARE-THESE PEOPLE ARE CROOKS!!!!!. These people stole ram from my computer and when I tried to contact them about it, they never answered my calls. When I went by the store to talk to them, the man behind the counter was so incredibly rude. He acted like it was all routine; wasn't apologetic AT ALL! While waiting in the store, the phone was ringing, and one of the workers yelled, "don't answer it anymore." Then, a worker proceeded to hang the phone up on someone. After this, yet another worker pulled the phone cord out of the wall and said, "have a merry christmas working your a%@ off for the rest of your life." I have never seen anything like this in my entire life. Also while in the store, there was a handicapped man asking for help with his computer that he was picking up. The same rude man behind the counter basically told him to go to hell, and was not one bit interested in helping him. I intend to report them to the B B B and encourage everyone else who has encountered problems, to do the same. I am also going to search for other means of warning people about this horrid company. I KNOW it is no coincidence that this many people have had similar problems. I wish I would have read these reviews before taking my computer there. IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK!!! PLEASE save yourself time, money, and frustration. I just wonder how many people have gotten ripped off because they didn't know how to check their ram and other computer components. Be sure to check your computers when you get them back!
