A humming, beating, vibrating, music mega store..
In Short
Just as the electric guitar started gaining popularity in the '60s, so did this once-modest, now monumental music store chain, which has grown to become the country's largest retailer of musical instruments. The store is packed with merchandise hanging overhead, crowding the aisles and monopolizing the walls. Contrary to its name, it's not just about acoustic and electric guitars; it also serves the needs of keyboardists, drummers and horn players.
Wall to wall and floor to ceiling guitars. I walked into this store tonight to see if they have a beginner guitar for my son. As I walked through the turnstile which was a little strange, there was 3 or 4 people playing beautifully on an electric guitar to my right, as I walked further, a guy fixing strings on a guitar for somebody to my left, and a guy walking into the room full of acoustic guitars who grabbed a guitar off the wall and started playing as I walked into the room and looked at the wall of children's guitars. I felt like I was being serenaded, although I'm sure he was just practicing or trying it out : ) . A few minutes later the guy who fixed the strings came in to tune the repaired guitar to another. From the moment I walked in I felt like I could breathe in guitars. A refreshing change from searching endlessly online and walking into another music store in town and feeling disgruntled as I walked out. I walked out of this one and someone asked me if I found what I was looking for. I told him I found the wall of children's guitars and asked him if that was what they had and what would be the least expensive beginner's guitar for my seven year old. He let me know what it would be and that it has a really good sound, and told me they had other options in electric if I wanted to go that way. That told me he really knew his product, he didn't have to go back and look to check the price and knew what sound it made without even having to look at it or play it. I didn't walk out with a purchase, but I will definently be back. Also to find out if they know of beginning guitar lessons a little closer to home than South Austin! A nice advantage to 9 to 5 (or 6 or 7pm) working schedules is that they are open til 9pm on weekdays.
