Small SoCo area spot serves up unique takes on traditional Tex-Mex staples, like gorditas and migas, for breakfast and lunch.

We got to admit that this is the best breakfast you can ever have to start your day off right. The breakfast tacos come fully loaded with plenty of great ingredients to choose from. They keep our staff here at your local friendly RadioShack very happy and very full.

Nueva Onda's awesome. The first time I stepped into the place, I was made to feel like family -- the staff is that friendly and I really appreciate that. And I could tell by the way they talked to other customers that this is a pretty common friendliness. I know it's the food that can make or break a restaurant, but you have to admit it's great to feel welcome (and almost as if we've been missed) in a place. I call it the "Cheers" of Austin ... where everybody knows your name. It's like that and they have their solid flow of regulars. There's even a Cliff! BUT THE FOOD!! The staff's charm aside, I never felt so at home as I did when I had my first lunch here. It tasted just like my grandmother's cooking that I'd been missing ... and frankly, my grandmother's a little upset that she doesn't see me as much anymore! OOoops. The food here might be too much like hers. :) The fresh aguas frescas drinks are always a treat. They change depending on what fruits they have available, but I'm addicted to the limeade and horchata (rice milk cinnamon drink). I've ordered the horchata at other places - they use mixes. Ick! They make it fresh here. It's simply heaven! The patio is perfect, too. Even when it's scorching hot, it's hard to resist sitting on the patio. I can't rave enough about it because it's everything that helped Austin be the kind of city that everyone wanted to live in -- friendly service, great food, laidback setting, an ecclectic mix of patrons all equally comfortable there ... and it's all so very unassuming. Unfortunately, it's one of the few places that remains truly Austin, in light of the influx of those so "enamored" with Austin (then come here and CHANGE IT!!). Can you tell I'm bitter? I hate that Austin's losing its personality. That's why I support this place so avidly. It's locally owned. the food's good and cheap, they're friendly and I LOVE it.

Take it from a Mexican American who grew up in the Rio Grande Valley (i.e., someone who knows how to spell 'calabacita', and who knows that you never ask for sour cream if you're looking for TexMex). This is the real deal. Not every dish is perfection, but the food tastes as close to my grandmother's cooking as I've ever tasted at an Austin restuarant. And that's saying a lot.
