In Short – Hill's Cafe dates back to the 1940s, and has the look and feel of an old-time country cafe with vinyl booths. Outside, an enormous oak spreads leafy limbs over a patio, complete with a homey shack and live-music stage. Popular entrees include the Texas Rancher's Choice, a 12-ounce sirloin served with a sweet potato with praline sauce. Other soul-food classics include chicken-fried steak, green beans, slow-cooked mashed potatoes and peach cobbler.
Excellent food, fun atmosphere...

Interesting, relaxed atmosphere, tons of country music/ movie/political photos cover the walls - each booth/table has been named, giving the impression that some history comes with the place...excellent food: great club sandwich, excellent chicken fried etc., very good vegetables and sides...sadly, some items on the menu were no longer available (so why are they on there?), one member of our party was devastated that the tres leches cake was no longer offered...service was friendly, informed, accurate, quick...we want to come back:: for the food, when there's a band playing, and to explore the rambling outdoor areas.
- Pros: service/well prepared, good home cooking...
- Cons: some menu items no longer available...

The best time to visit Hill's is on Wednesday night when the Free Texas Music Series is going on. Free concert every Wednesday. The bartenders here are absolutely amazing. I really haven't eatin here much, the food has been good when I have eatin here.
- Pros: Live Music, Bartenders
- Cons: Getting a table, and the wait
Very Disappointed
by JCP3151
I had heard a lot about the restaurant and I am a big fan of Bucky & Bob on the radio, so I was glad when a trip brought me to Austin. What a disappointment! I ordered the national dish of Texas, Chicken Fried Steak. What our surly waiter brought me was quite a small piece of meat with yellow gravy. Portion wise it was certainly not nearly up to Texas standards, but that turned out to be fortunate as it just didn?t plain didn?t taste very good. If I ever go back, very questionable, maybe I will try the hamburger. What a great disappointment, skip Hill?s and go to the time tested Threadgill?s.

When to Go:
Wednesday-Saturday evenings feature performances by such musicians as Steve Fromholz, Rickie Calmbach and Pauline Reese. If it strikes your fancy, get a shoeshine in an old-fashioned chair Thursday-Saturday evenings.
Fun Fact:
Nolan Ryan may be known for baseball career, but itÂ’s the tender-aged, USDA-certified cuts of steak that keep his legacy going around here.
