The Scene
Set in a long, narrow space, Sampaio's is intimate and cozy. Textured ochre walls meet a mauve ceiling and original pastels by Maria Lyle add a bright touch to the decor. A cafe area near the front makes the perfect place to sip an espresso or try the delicious housemade desserts. Diners get a warm welcome from co-owner Magna Sampaio.

The Food
Bolinho de arroz (small deep-fried balls of rice and potatoes blended with herbs and ricotta cheese) is an unusual but delicious starter. Bacalhau (sun-dried cod baked with tangy green olives, tomatoes and Parmesan on a bed of potatoes) is a lovely combination of flavors, but the fish can be a bit dry. Sides of soft collard greens and fresh orange slices complement hearty feijoada, a savory black-bean stew simmered with sausage and ham. Finish with tres leches cake, dripping with milk and crested with a fresh whipped cream frosting.
