Austin >Manny's Uptown Kitchen
We loved it!.
We recently moved to Austin area. We were shopping at the Gateway Mall & were STARVING -- we saw Manny's &, though we usually don't eat at "malls" & it looked a bit too much like a chain from the outside, our growling stomachs drew us in.
Beautiful interior & lengthy menu urged us to sit down. And we're GLAD we did - the waitress was VERY friendly & helpful in explaining dishes & ordering process. We saw how large the portions are so next time we will split our meals -- but this time, our 10 year old son RAVED about the Chicken Fried Chicken. I had the YUMMY Butternut Squash "dumplings" (forget the name they had) & my husband had a big salad that, though basic ingredients, was fresh & delicious, too.
For dessert we all 3 split an AMAZINGLY UNIQUE hot fudge sundae. WHOLE glass was dipped in delectable hot fudge! ;)
We're not from NY or Jewish, but this "comfort" food experience will DEFINITELY bring us back!
Used to be good, but now just awful.
We've been eating at Manny Hattan's since they opened. Used to love dining there, especially on Fridays for the Manhattan Clam Chowder.
But no more.
The new menu is a jumbled mess. Not only are most of their old food selections gone from the menu, but the new selections are divided into arbitrary sections that don't make any sense. Add to that a complete lack of proofreading of the revised menu (prices missing, words misspelled).
The new food is far worse than the new menu. Simply unacceptable. What they call a "Brown Derby Cobb Salad" bears NO resemblance whatsoever to an actual Brown Derby Cobb (which we had a week ago at the one remaining Brown Derby Restaurant). A sandwich was served on flavorless bread with no condiments -- what happened to the mustard?
Everything that we liked about Manny Hattans is gone. No more "scoops" available. No more soups-of-the-day. No more pickles before the meal.
I think the worst offense of all, though, was the new waitstaff. I don't think our waiter had any experience whatsoever as a waitperson. Having to ask for soda refills is a big red flag for me about a waiter's training (or lack thereof). The waitstaff seemed completely at a loss as to how to appease all the unhappy customers -- it wasn't the waitstaff's fault that no one in the restaurant liked the new food, but they certainly didn't handle it well when customers complained. And a lot of customers were complaining. When we told our waiter that the salad was unacceptable, he mumbled something and walked off. When he brought the check, he asked how our meal was, knowing full well that we had not enjoyed it -- and we told him that our meal was terrible and that we wouldn't be dining there ever again. He didn't say anything.
So my advice is to skip Manny Hattan's from now on. There are plenty of other decent places to eat in the Arboretum area, and pretty much all of them would be a better choice than this place.
Horrible Food AND a Cheeseball = No Thanks !. One of the worst food experiences of my life....I have noticed that some of these reviews have to be written by some of the staff that works there since they are all done on the same date 3/17/09 time frame as opposed to being spread out...they are all pretty obvious and fake sounding. In these times when money is scarce you need to be able to find the best bang for your buck, and well ladies and gentlemen..THIS IS CERTAINLY NOT THE PLACE ! ! ! The food is bland, nothing special about it at all...we are talking about $12 a plate..stay away from this place you have been warned ! And whats with the fake cheesy owner ? Does he think he's part of the mob or something ? He walks around sayin How Ya Doin with his shirt open and his gold necklace..does he think he's cool doing that? This place should be out of buisness soon
Nothing special for the price. I had a pastrami and swiss, my friend had a turkey sandwich. The menu read over a half pound of meat on the classic sandwich, No Way ! We both had rye bread, which was stale and I couldn't even chew it. I was blown away when I got the bill for 2 sands and 2 drinks $31.57 ! First and last time for me.
Worst Dining Experience in Austin.
My party was the only one of TWO in the entire restaurant. I placed a simple order: Two glasses of water, two tuna melts, one without bacon, and an order of onion rings as an appetizer. The server confirmed that he would bring the onion rings out before the meal. They arrived after our plates were clean, as if the onion rings were a desert item. I sent them back, because we were finished with our meal. I didn't recieve an "I'm sorry" from the manager or the server. Instead, your entire staff vacated the restuarant floor and went to the kitchen. To do what? I'm not sure, but certainly not to refresh our beverages, which were never refilled. The server eventually came back out and told me "Usually, I just bring everything all at once." I said, "I asked for this as an appetizer, and you told me you would bring it out before the sandwiches." He walked away. All I needed to hear from this guy was "I'm sorry that I screwed up your order."
I waited ten minutes for a check, which again, was delivered to my table without an "I'm sorry." I went to pay my bill, and I had to guess, which side of the counter would take my money beacuse the hostess and the manager were BOTH too busy taking another customers to-go order. I hate feeling that I'm bothering wait staff and management with my business. I hate feeling like I'm working for you when I'm paying to eat at your restuarant. And most of all, I hate being treated like an inconvienance. Which is how I was treated today. But I'm done. I'm taking my busienss somewhere else. Somewhere where the wait staff appreciates business during a recession.
Pastrami. Pastrami. Pastrami. say it again..
It's St. Patrick's Day, so I'm heading back to Manny Hattan's to get another Statue of Liberty sandwich.
I had one yesterday for lunch (they catered lunch to my office, trays included Cole Slaw, Pickles, Iced Tea jug, Fruit Salad, and assorted sandwiches) and I had one of these combinations.
I loved it. Best Corned Beef & Pastrami I've had since I worked downtown NYC in 1983. They steam it fresh (you can watch from the front of the restaurant) and I'm a big fan.
Also liked the 1/2 Sour pickles. Wish they could still have the buckets on the table like the old days (health dept I guess says this is bad now) but you still get a couple pickles on the table.
Deli mustard was pretty good. little spicy, but I liked it.
Worthy of a Good Review. I really liked this place..
Tired of people trying to be so darn negative.
I've lived in Austin 20 years, and travel back to NY 3-4 times a year. Manny Hattan's is the best Deli that Austin has had since I've been here.
Great Sandwiches. Awesome Reubens. Good Bagels & Lox. Good Cheesecake. Pastrami better than Carnegie. Servers are really sweet, not rude like New York.
Stop trying to prove they're not New York, and just enjoy the food. Tired of hearing everyone on this site pretend they're an expert.
Fact - almost all products at Manny Hattan's are the same as what you would find at Carnegie, Stage, Kenny & Ziggy, etc...
I love this place, and you will too.
It IS worth the money. Period..
I have read all the older reviews on Manny Hattan's that say it's expensive, and while it ain't cheap I completely disagree. You get what you pay for.
I don't want this place to begin to serve the same garbage they serve at Katz's, so I hope they don't listen to the stupid critics that want to change them to save a buck.
The best Corned Beef & Pastrami costs money, and brother do they have it! They bring in the best Bagels & Cheesecake from New York City and I'm guessing that ain't cheap, either. Their Lox is flown in fresh from Brooklyn.
I'm not looking to spend a fortune on a sandwich either guys, but I'm willing to spend a couple of bucks on Manny Hattan's. To me, the service & best Deli we have found in Texas are easily worth it.
Cheesecake is the BEST.
A friend that loves Cheesecake told me to check out Manny Hattans. Said they get theirs from the Carnegie Deli in NYC, which along with Juniors in Brooklyn is easily the best CCake I've ever had.
Went on Saturday night with another couple, right after movie at the Gateway Theatre. Didn't have any problems getting in, and the Host & Server were friendly. But the Cheesecake was AWESOME! Many things don't measure up 20 years later, but this Cheesecake brought back some memories. Rich, Creamy, Delicious (I sound like an advertisement) and probably had a few calories in there... but I'm a big fan and I will definitely be back to Manny Hattan's for Cheesecake.
FYI. Black & White Cookies looked pretty good, too. Absolutely too full, so will try next time and post again.
decent food for a massively over priced bill.
My wife and I eat out alot and we decided to try manny's mainly because it was open on christmas.
After looking at there menu I decided on the brooklyn (roast beef turkey and swiss) and it was decent but not worth 10.99 my Wife got the Giants stadium ( some kinda kanish) for another 10.99 and the food was decent but we should have gotten a hell of a lot more food for the 30 bucks we ended up paying (no desserts) I would recomend jasons deli before this place just due to the sheer cost comapred to what you get althou it is better then katz deli on 6th
