I took my wife here for lunch because
she loves teppanyaki places and while I generally don't dislike them, this experience was an exception.
After perusal of the lunch menu we found it had the usual fare - however lunch prices were outrageous! We figured whatever - as long as the food was good.
MISTAKE! - we should have finished our drinks, paid, and left before even ordering. Had I asked around or even checked reviews online I would have done so. We started with sashimi which arrived quickly and was rather good. It was fresh and cold and seemed to be a great start to the meal. However - when the chef arrived everything changed.
First off, the chef was about as enthusiastic as a dead horse. No talking, no nothing - other than asking how we would like our steaks prepared. After he started, he only prepared ONE THING AT A TIME! By the time one part of the meal was finished the other was cold.
The chef started off with fried rice - which was prepared incorrectly and tasted like soggy burnt popcorn when finished. No amount of soy or seasonings would make this edible.
My wife wanted noodles so I opted to pay $6 for a side of noodles which turned out to be your off-the-shelf ramen with a funky sauce which tasted horrible.
My wife ordered samurai steak and shrimp combo and I had a ribeye. When the chef pulled out the steaks, I noticed they all looked identical - which when eating I realized they were. I have BBQ'd quite a bit and I know your standard cuts of meat - and I'm not sure what cuts these steaks were but they were much tougher than sirloin (which is what I expected the samurai would be) - and THEY WERE EXACTLY THE SAME. I was tricked into paying $13.95 for a $3.00 piece of meat. That's not the worst part - while eating the meat had a funny aftertaste that became more and more noticeable the more you ate. I do believe the meat was spoiling and we both left sick to our stomachs and as I am writing this, I have the feeling I need to vomit. Needless to say I didn't finish my meal (which nearly never happens) and my wife didn't really eat anything at all, besides the sashimi.
Perhaps it is because I paid a total of $84.05 for a meal that was garbage - or it could simply be the food. Quite possibly a combination of both. I have had much better meal experiences eating at McDonald's and it was a lot cheaper. This is the first time I can remember feeling so ripped off at a dining establishment, and the first I have ever been compelled to write a bad review about someplace.
Trust me, if you don't want to feel the same as I do - AVOID THIS PLACE ALTOGETHER!
Food OK Service not so much. The entertainment of the "chefs" as they prepare your food is good (not excellent). The service / attention to any protocol of service is lousy. If the food was served to you without the fanfare of the preparation, most of us would rate it as something none of us would care to eat again. The 3 star rating is only because of the effort of the chef to entertain, not because of the quality of the food. Food alone would get a 2 star rating.
The WORST service ever!. We just went there tonight for my daughters 11th birthday. Our waiter Zach couldn't have been lazier if he tried! Another party also was seated at our grill table, and it was their daughters 16th birthday. It took FOREVER to get a drink order started, forever to actually fill it, and then yet again for a dinner order. 45 min before a chef even started cooking. Then the chef did a cutesy thing with rice and a candle for the 16 yr old bday and NOTHING for my daughter who was seated at the SAME table! We told the waiter 3 times. Still not one acknowledgment. We had to chase the guy into the kitchen just to get our check! PATHETIC! I will never go back! 2 1/2 hours on a weeknight for dinner! Oh not to mention - he served the 18 year old sister alcohol without ID! She said she didn't have it with her. Her mother TOLD me she was 18! Maybe if Zach quit ogling over her breasts, there might have been some fraction of service. Never again.

The service was poor. During our lunch our table had 4 different servers. Without being given menus we were asked if we were ready to order. We ordered sushi which was good, though the order came out incorrect. (we received an extra piece that we did not get charged for)
We each ordered a plate. His plate of filet mignon and vegetables was room temperature at best. No where near hot. I ordered shrimp and chicken. I had 4 small, over cooked shrimp and 8 pieces of ridiculously over cooked chicken and a good portion of vegetables. This is what you get for $22.95? Seriously?? I ate 1 piece of the chicken and had to wash it down with a drink of tea due to the extreme dryness. At least my vegetables were hot though they had an odd almost bitter flavor to them. I assumed the soy sauce used had gotten slightly burned.
The manager (owner?) did take the cost of my meal off of the ticket since I took only 1 bite of the chicken, didn't touch the shrimp and a few bites of the vegetables, but only took $2 off the cost of the cold meal. Then as we are checking out we get informed that an 18% gratuity was automatically added to our ticket. It was like adding insult to injury.
Used to be good. When I first began eating here the food was stellar. If there ever was a problem which there rarely was the manager Keith would fall all over himself to make it right. Today I went and we ate at the tables as opposed to the grills. The food was cold when it hit our tables,the meat was overcooked and the rice was just eh.......I told the waiter and he told Keith. The response from Keith bordered on unconcerned. I hope that this was a bad day and I could truly overlook that but the dismissal was not.
Great food, awesome sushi. The food here is always great, little pricey if you go for dinner but they have killer lunch specials and a great happy hour. They have the best sushi I've had in Austin, and the fried rice is the bomb. If your looking for a fun meal I recommend sitting at the hibachi table at evening for the full show. If you order an entree plan on walking out with a to go box because they'll fill you up.
We've Become Regulars. We try to make it to Kobe about once a week. Keith is a manager there and welcomes us with a handshake and a smile. We have done the Dinner there and enjoyed the show. But what brings us back is the lunch specials. We always sit at the Hibachi Grills. My wife gets the Terriaki Chicken with a salad every time. They have some items they rotate through the lunch specials. So you need to check the items when your seated. They also have sushi lunch specials. So often times I double up and get the sushi special and one of the other lunch specials. This makes for ALOT of food. Always leave feeling stuffed.
VERY BEST SUSHI DEAL IN TOWN.
I have to admit I have not tried the show where everyone sits around a grill watching the chef twirl spatulas while cooking up fried rice. My wife and I...our thing is SUSHI.
Their Sushi is fresh, tasty, and served rather quickly even though we custom order our servings.
But here's why we love it. From 4pm-7pm they have Happy Hour on their Sushi. They have a generous selection of Sushi on sale for HALF PRICE. We ordered: Miso soup, pork dumpling appetizer, 2 Tuna nigiri, 2 Yellow tail nigiri, California roll, Texas Roll, Crunch Roll, and one other Roll my wife likes and all of that came to $15.78. That's 32 pieces of sushi rolls, 4 pieces of nigiri Sushi, soup and appetizer. With a couple of beers we get out of there stuffed for less than $25. We go EVERY Friday and highly recommend you try their Happy Hour.
Great place for the family or just for couples. Your table will contain all the entertainment you need. You will enjoy the company and the cook. I love it. Kobe is my favorite. I love the atmosphere and lively fun.
We enjoy our lunch for the most part, we have been a few time, food is great, today our cook put to much salt on our food and when we try to talk to him he just looked at us, I am guessing he does not speek english very well.. This has become one of our favorite places to go for lunch, When my son came home from being in Iraq for 15 months the staff gave a nice welcome, he said it was the best dinner he had in 15 months..
Over all nice place!!
