Meet the "Soup Notsi".
Re: the Davenport location....I used to live nearby, so I came here when I wanted something other than Mexican or Chili's. The food was always so-so, way over-priced for the quality of ingredients, but the reason I'm writing this review is because I have never experienced such rudeness and hostility from a business owner, EVER. She is always there, and I often witnessed her abusing other customers also. I just could not understand what this woman's problem was....here people are giving her business good money for her food, and she must think they will keep doing it even if she snaps at them, yells at employees, rolls her eyes at the simplest question, and heavy sighs at the smallest request. I have talked to other people who used to eat here as well and they had the same thing to say....I might still eat there but the owner gives me heartburn!!! If you want to meet a real-life "soup notsi", just pay her a visit, but don't waste your money.
p.s. misspelling of a certain word was intentional
Favorite dtown lunch spot. Thistle is hands down my favorite lunch spot in dtown Austin. the food is amazing and they have great variety. It gets crowded for lunch and sometimes feels understaffed but besides that it is perfect. I would go there every day if I could. They also serve great bfast tacos and starbucks in the mornings.
Corporate Event. Thistle Cafe came highly recommended to me by another event planner for a corporate dinner I hosted a few weeks ago. The restaurant itself has a relaxed and comfortable feel and is in an excellent location for downtown events . We had the entire restaurant to ourselves and the menu we customized was fantastic. We started the night with cocktails and passed appetizers - all my guests were trying to keep themselves from over eating..it was hard to do with their tasty crab cakes, AWESOME lamb lollipops and the fabulous shrimp diablo! Because we had the restaurant to ourselves, my guest could easily mingle and unwind before we sat for dinner. For the main entree I offered a choice of the seared tuna, Chilean sea bass, beef tenderloin and a wonderful pasta dish. ALL the service was excellent with absolutely no complaints. We ended the evening with their signature dessert called cookies and cream that is absolutely divine! Herman and Susan are great to work with and offer suggestions that will make any corporate event planner shine :) We have booked the next dinner and are looking forward to it!
Quick & tasty Downtown lunch. I work a couple blocks away and I go to Thistle 3 to 4 times a week for lunch. It's my Favorite! It is so convienant and quick and I have found the staff to be very friendly. I do try and miss the lunch rush 12-1ish because the line can get pretty long. All of the salads are delicious I switch it up between the Chicken Spinach salad and the Chef salad most days. But if you are not into salad they have great sandwiches and wraps (tuna salad is amazing) and all sorts of pasta. I find there food to be good quality and always fresh! I can't complain! Also a great place for a business luncheon.
A wedding reception venue of perfection.
Finding The Thistle Cafe was like discovering a hidden treasure in Downtown Austin. I wanted to have a unique setting for my wedding reception and when I heard that The Thistle rents there downtown location out on the evenings and weekends for private parties, I was thrilled. It was a beautiful place to have a reception. Its modern decor is perfect for those not wanting to spend a lot of money on large elaborate floral arrangements. I worked with Herman and Susan and they were both very helpful and accommodating, and the service was great.
Most importantly, the food was fantastic. I got so many complements on the quality of food and the unique and beautiful setting. It was as if all my guests were surprised that a wedding could encompass both elements.
I have recommended them again and again to my friends who are getting married and want something more interesting than a hotel ballroom reception.
First Time Visit, Never Going Back. Tried this place for the first time, thinking menu sounded good. I'm new to downtown and this is in walking distance from my office. First off, I don't know what other meal times are like, but the lunch staff is extremely disorganized, harried and unhappy. They looked like they had no management on duty or just very poorly managed. The line was long to order in since they had only one register open. In this busy city center you'd think they'd plan ahead and put more staff on at lunch, to serve the business crowd. My food took an overly long time to arrive as well. They tout this place as upscale but at lunch it's basically like ordering in a cafeteria...you get your own tea, water or soda and the only thing waitstaff does is bring you your food. The staff looks about as miserable as they can get and I wonder what the turnover is in this restaurant. My $13 lunch was worth about $4...food was overcooked. Really, how long does one cook a hamburger to turn it into an almost charred hockey puck? Fries were okay but grease needed to be changed or else the potatoes were starting to turn...something tasted "off". While waiting to place my order, I overheard people in the takeout line complaining to each other about their wait. While eating, I overheard the table next to me gripe about the low quality of their food. I was singularly unimpressed with Thistle. I'm disappointed and I wonder how they stay in business.
Really Bad Food, Worst Service in Downtown.
I work in the building that houses Thistle Cafe on 6th. Once a month or so I give them another chance. I'm wasting my money and my time. The food varies from "ehh" to so-so. Service is consistently awful. Customers are ignored, not even acknowledged until the staff looks up from whatever they were doing. Picking up To Go orders is the worst. You call your order in, they say "15 minutes". You arrive and wait 10 minutes to be acknowledged then 5 more minutes for food. Yesterday I watched them unwrap my sandwich twice to see what it was while it sat and grew soggy. The excuse for no greeting and ultra slow service? They had two large to go orders before mine. Well, then tell me it'll be 30 minutes instead of 15. My BLT was awful and this is normally their (rare) good menu item. There were a few slices of bacon but mostly the bits & pieces from the sludge in the bottom of the pan, grease and all. The bottom slice of toast was completely soaked in grease. My side salad was inedible. The greens were wilted to the point that not even the stem portion of the romaine had any crunch.
Each time I eat food from here I'm sorry I did, sorry that I threw my money away on a poor lunch. But I keep trying again. Not anymore. There are many places downtown that deliver a much better lunch for less or equal pricing. And they'll smile at me. The only time I get any semblance of customer service at Thistle is from the coffee guy in the morning. Thistle is great for coffee--they serve Starbuck's. Avoid the breakfast tacos...as tacos go these are as third rate as it gets. Blah, ketchupy salsa and they've been sitting in a warming tray for hours, long enough to harden the tortillas. If you want breakfast their muffins and scones aren't bad although not a large selection. They do serve hardboiled eggs, too. The yogurt is overpriced, you'll pay $2 for what you can get at the grocery for 75 cents. Want kashi to top that yogurt? Add a dollar.
Thistle's not worth it.
Ideal Place for Rehearsal Dinner in Austin. Planning a rehearsal dinner in Austin? You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't at least consider the Thistle for your dinner. I am in the process of planning my January wedding. My fiance originally contacted 5-6 different restaurants in Austin to get pricing and menu options. The owners of the Thistle (Herman and Susan) got back to him within some hours (whereas the other restaurants left us hanging) with AMAZING options for our rehearsal dinner and VERY reasonable pricing. Herman showed us around the beautiful and spacious 6th street location and went over the various set ups of the room and the various ways we can serve our dinner. He was MORE THAN accomodating and such a pleasure to spend time with. Then, Herman and Susan had my fiance and me for dinner at their N. Capital of Texas location - another gorgeous location with great outdoor seating and a fabulous view of the Texas Hill Country. Herman and Susan sat with us for 3 hours, enjoying wine and fun conversation, while allowing us to taste a variety of starters, salads, entrees, and one of the best apple pies I have ever enjoyed. Not to mention the great wine!!! We're not sure which we enjoyed more - the fabulous food or the fun company! We are really really looking forward to working with the Thistle on our rehearsal dinner, and we can't say enough about how well they will treat you!!! For a rehearsal dinner, renting an entire restaurant in downtown Austin on a weekend for a reasonable price and great food - You really can't ask for more than that.
Great for any type of party!. First, the food is absolutely superb. Second, the service is impeccable. Third, it's beautiful, was perfect for my wedding reception. We selected Thistle after visiting a number of other local restaurant. What first attracted us was the friendly staff and management. Our guests loved it! On more than one occasion, several guests told me that it was the best food they ever had at a reception. Herman, the chef, is awesome. It's evident that he loves making good food. If you are getting married in Austin, I would highly recommend considering Thistle for a great dining experience! Plus, it is right downtown so after dinner all the guest went out on the town to dance the night away!
Fantastic Service even better food!. I first experiened Thistle for a small birthday luncheon with a group of my girlfriends and we had a wonderful experience. Not only was the food decadent the service was exceptional. between the 8 of us we tried a variety of things on the menu and we were all extremely satisfied. Although the restaurant was packed we were still treated like queens. The service was very attentive and we even got the pleasure of meeting the chef who was incredibly charnming and generous, he gave us free birthday dessert and a bottle of champagne for our little celebration! We were all so impressed that one of the ladies decided to have her wedding reception here and it was nothing short of perfect! Thistle is a gem, and I would not hesitate to reccomend it to anyone!
