Editorial Review for European-Bistro – by Susan Kirr

In Short
Sisters Anni Zovek and Piroska Althauser brought Hungarian food to the Austin area. Their grandmother cooked in a monastery in the Austro-Hungarian empire circa 1913, and most of their family recipes derive from that era. The large, old Main Street building features a spacious dining room with storefront windows, tin ceilings and several alcoves for privacy. Eastern European fare includes freshly made Russian beef pirogi (dumplings) and pork tenderloin schnitzel with a puffy bread coating.

I love the building this restaurant is in. We went for lunch on saturday and there was only one other group there, it was dark and a little too quiet in there but the food was to die for. We ordered the beef gulyas with a side of spaetzle....yummm! Amazingly tender, melt in your mouth good...but soo lean. It was wonderful, I also has a garden salad with homemade tomato basil vinagarette which was soo unique and tasty. To be honest, i think the decor is out of date, bordering on tacky, but its obvious that they are going for a romantic, higher-end ambiance. The food made up for this, however, it was wonderful. Our server was very knowlegable and farmilliar with the menu and friendly enough, maybe slightly snooty, but not rude. We were too full for dessert but they had some delicious looking crepes and strudle...I will try them in the future. Overall...don't let the decor deter you...the food is worth it. I think we went at an off time of day, so it wasnt crowded...I dont know how it would be at dinner.

Pros: Amazing food, unique culturally diverse menu

Cons: bad decor
