Editorial Review for The Onion – by Stuart Wade

In Short
This no-frills pizzeria on the busy intersection of Fifth and Congress provides one of downtown's best pizza-by-the-slice options. The Onion serves up zesty, traditional New York-style slices, and also counts wings, salads and cheese sticks among its most popular items. Sit or stand at a small, side counter in a bustling, postage-stamp-sized room. It's open late, making for a popular last stop after the heat and crowds of Sixth Street.

I am continually amazed and impressed by this small little place that competes with the likes of Roppolo's Pizza, the other pizzeria downtown bent on selling their gummy crust pizza on every corner of downtown when the touristas are out and about. The Onion reminds me of the cool, layed back Austin’s eateries of the past. Places you could go to for good food in a no nonsense atmosphere at a good price. Except for places like Thundercloud’s, The Omelettry and Kirby Lane Café, these places are all but gone from the Austin landscape. The place is an enigma to the back drop of an ever increasingly hostile yuppie atmosphere the downtown area seems to be turning into these days – sigh. The pizza itself compares to the NYC pizza I survived on in the Big Apple for two years: really simple, relatively thin crust (compared to Ropplo’s) and always with fresh ingredients. This pizza is uniquely tasty for the Austin market.

Pros: simple great food at a good price

Cons: small place, but hey, you don't have to live there

I'm not a big pizza fan, but I loved this pizza! The sauce has a nice bite to it, and the crust is just the right thickness. A generous amount of cheese and other fresh toppings, nice crispy salad! I felt right at home, friendly folks. This is a regular stop for me when I'm in the area.

Pros: tops in quality, unique

Cons: couple of more barstools
