Austin >Freda's Seafood Grill
My Husband and I went there for our 6th anniversary. We had a reservation on a Saturday night but it didn't appear that we really needed one. The atmosphere was very nice, not too loud or too crowded. The food was good...the lobster shrimp bisque was the best I've ever had! Also, the fried pickles were to die for! My Husband had the stuffed shrimp while I had the Bourbon Pasta Blackened Shrimp. Both were good, but lacked a little flavor. I had to salt my pasta which is usually not a good sign. But the seafood was cooked to perfection. Next time I'll get the Paella which seemed to be a popular order around me, as well as the Pecan crusted Tilapia. They looked delicious! Since we were not disappointed with the flavor of the bisque and shrimp we will be going back to try something different. Deserves a second chance! Also, everyone seated near us ordered the buttermilk fried oysters...I should have taken the hint. We are new to the Austin area so this was our first time at Fredas, but definitely not our last!
Oh, the service was impeccable. Our waiter, Chad(?), was awesome and we never had to look for him when we needed him. Food was serviced rather quickly and our drinks we refilled before they were even close to being gone. Good job man!!
Best Sea Bass !!!.
We've eaten at Freda's twice in the last week or so!
Both times were really great. I highly recommend it.
The Sea Bass was so good the first time I had to go back again. Others at the table all had great meals as well. I think they had Tilapia and a blackened dish.
On the second visit we got there while happy hour was still going and enjoyed a couple of their appetizers as well. We ordered the calamari and the stuffed mushrooms(caper beurre blanc(sp?) sauce was grea).
There was music on the patio both times. Jazz once and soft rock another. Nice, pleasant, not too loud.
Service was good. Definitely will go back.
Food was good, service was good, a little overpriced..
I've passed by Freda's many times and always wondered about it. Seems to be pretty busy most of the time. So we searched for reviews and noticed these terrible ones from the past couple of years.
It almost deterred us, but we finally tried it on Saturday. It was a good gamble. The waitstaff was actually very friendly, our waitress was good with refills and very nice overall. The food was great, we love fried pickles and we have tried out every iteration we come across... Freda's by far has the best fried pickles that we've tried, also the green beans that came with the entree were very fresh, taste was very good all around. We had the tuna and the fish platter, it was more than enough food and presentation was good, the taste was great. We had an appetizer, two beers, two drinks, two entrees.. 60 bucks, not bad for a very comfortable feeling restaurant with a great tasting meal. Don't be disuaded by the other reviews.
Not impressed at all. After hearing people rave about Freda's I finally took a trip there and I have to say....it was the worst seafood I have ever had!!! I got fried oysters as an appetizer and they were like a ball of fried dough and all soggy inside...reaaally gross! I got fried catfish and shoelace fries as my entree. Not that I even love catfish but there were very few items on the menu. I ended up sharing my boyfriends crab legs which were mediocre. When the check came I could do nothing but laugh and chalk it up to an 'experience'. I don't mind paying for good food but this was NOT good.
Best steak & bread pudding.
my friend recommended me to try this restaurant. so I did.
hard to find, it is hiding in a corner of 183 and 620. We were sitting outside the patio since the weather was so nice. we both ordered the frozen margarita and they are actually very good for a $3 drink(they have some good happy hour specials). we didn't order seafood though. My friend ordered the burger(cheap 9.95) and I was craving for a good steak, so I ordered the NY Strip(expensive $25?). My steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned, it was tender and juicy! the BEST so far I had in Austin. my friend liked his burger as well. I tried some of his bread, it was some kind of sour dough, very good.
the service was good, even he had several other tables, but he made us feel very welcome.
will go back again.
forgot to mention the bread pudding. we ordered by the recommendation of our waiter. it was awesome, much better than the one I tried at TX landcatle and stanner ranch steak house.
Bad Brunch!. Mother's Day Brunch was a big disappointment. The menu on the website looked very fair for $18.95/pp. Luckily we had reservations - the place was packed with people. Every time that I went to go get some salad it was empty. The servers were rude when they were asked if the salad was going to be refilled. There was at least a 15 minute delay when replenishing the prime rib, horseradish sauce and steamed veggies. There were actually empty containers for at least 15 minutes. When the steamed broccoli/carrots were finally replenished, they were almost raw. They were out of dessert before 2 pm. even though the brunch was supposed to last until 3. They severely underestimated the number of people and/or the amount of food that was necessary.
Bad Tuna. My girlfriend and I went there Feb 19th around 8pm and there was no wait and few diners in the place. The atmosphere was nice. I did notice most dishes were in the 19 dollar range, with steaks being closer to $25 to $30. I ordered the Tuna steak and grilled shrimp and she ordered the grilled shrimp salad. When the tuna arrived I took a bite and it was extremely fishy tasting and smelling. I had my lady try it and she confirmed it was bad. I sent it back with the waiter and he came back from the kitchen and confirmed both he and the cook thought it was so bad they threw all the remainder tuna steaks out. I was asked to pick something else. I got the pecan crusted Talapia. The Talapia was okay, the crawfish sauce on it was good, but there was hardly any on the fish. The grilled shrimp had no flavor, smoked, or otherwise. It was like they put shrimp in a pan and cooked it. I was very disappointed in the food and would not go back at half the price. I would have to say the best part of the meal was the green beans.
Good Food, Overpriced.
The steak was good-cooked perfectly, but honestly could get a better steak at saltgrass for half the price. The atmosphere was romantic, the service was great. My Husband & I split the oysters on the half shell (Perfecto) and the surf & Turf-not worth $45. We Both split an app & entree, and the ticket still came out to $70 + tip!
The only reason we would go back is if they're having an amazing special.
Freda-Great restaurant, Steep Prices.
Seafood Paella. Hands down the best Paella I've ever had. Perfect level of heat, impossible to take a bite without at least two different meats, the risotto was exactly right. The chicken was juicy and tender - hard to maintain in a mixed dish like this. The sausage was excellent. ...The squid was just right - not tough or chewy, also hard to do in mixed dish. The shrimp was simply awesome. I am completely blown away.
Epic fail at service. I went in on a Sunday evening and ordered take-out there. No one greeted me when I came in. There was no one behind the bar. They shorted me an item and took a ridculously long time to get it. No one cared that there were more patrons coming in and ignored them, too. Everyone I interacted with was completely unfriendly and could care less about providing good service. One of the worst experiences I've encountered with a restaurant.
