I miss Elsi's. I moved out of state a couple years ago and I still find myself missing Elsi's on a Saturday morning! Their chilequiles with verde sauce and a fried egg on top is one of my favorite dishes. The atmosphere is welcoming and the food is great.
WILL DRIVE THE DISTANCE FOR ELSI'S. I LIVE IN FAR SOUTH AUSTIN, I FIND MYSELF DRIVING 20-25 MILES JUST FOR THEIR FOOD. THE WAITSTAFF IS WONDERFUL AND ATTENTIVE AND THE PLACE IS ALWAYS BRIGHT AND CLEAN. THE FOOD TASTE ALMOST LIKE MY GRANDMOTHER HOME COOKING. THE FOOD ALWAYS TASTE SO FRESH AND I CANT SAY THAT I HAVE A FAVORITE DISH, BECAUSE ALL THE FOOD IS GREAT. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO ALL MY FRIENDS!!
Pretty good, will definitely try again. We got the pupusas and a dish that was similar to chicken flautas. I wasn't totally wowed, but they were pretty tasty. We loved the black beans, very flavorful, unlike some places which are very bland. The service was very good, as were the margaritas. We will definitely give it another try; we really would like to try the breakfast.
Best Central/South American Food. Elsi's is a wonderful, down to earth restaurant, with excellent food, prices, and friendly staff. Everything I have ever tried here has been delicious and well worth the money. My favorite dish is the Pupusas, a specialty plate from El Salvador. I love it so much I have to go there when I am having a craving! Their traditional Latin food is just as great, and you must stop in for one of their wonderful breakfasts, which are quite popular. This has become one of my favorite affordable places to visit, with my family, or when I am needing some Mommy time out! Please give it a try, you won't be disappointed!
Great selection, friendly staff. A great place for residents of Allandale. It used to be in a small house a few blocks south, but is now in what used to be an Academy. Everything is good here, except for the accoustics.
Good Food. Eat Here.. I liked it the handfull of times that I've eaten there. Read the neg reviews, I don't doubt that they might have had an off night, every restaurant does occationally. The food was good, beans and rice were excellent. The host that seated us was quiet but not rude, I would think in keeping with the style of the restaurant. The "head waiter" came to our table and chatted us up, he was very friendly and welcoming. This place really has a family feel too it, try it. Their prices are very reasonable and the food is served literally within 10 minutes of sitting down, they're fast so be ready to eat when you order, not much time for an appetizer.
Enjoy affordable Mexican food, with Salvadoran specialties thrown in for good measure, at this neighborly diner..
In Short
It feels like a neighbor's home that's been converted into a casual Mexican diner, with comfortable booths and colorful chairs and tables. Chips with piquant salsa are served immediately. The Al Pastor entree is a popular entree: roasted pork with pineapple that suffuses the meat with sweetness. Salvadoran dishes include savory pupusas (pork or cheese-filled fried masa with refreshing, pickled cabbage slaw) and fresh, cheese-stuffed chayote squash--egg batter-fried, but still light.
Don't Bother. Upon arriving with my party of 6, we were greeted (using the term loosely) by a waitress who never even smiled and didn't seem very attentive. I was hoping her bad attitude would be overshadowed by having some delicious food, but even that was mediocre. The spinach and mushroom empanadas had almost no flavor and were not worth the money spent. None of the other members of my party seemed thrilled about their meals either. I definitely wouldn't go back there again and would never recommend this place to anyone.
Great Breakfast!. My family has breakfast at Elsi's most Sunday mornings. The food is excellent and there is a good variety of choices, including American choices for my mom who does not care for Mexican. The place is clean and spacious. We have at least 5 and sometimes as many as 15 people, so far they can accomodate us easily. The service is slow but the staff is friendly. You will not be rushed, but you may have to flag down your server!
Terrible.
It is not often I write a review simply to criticize a restaurant, but in the case of Elsi's I feel compelled.
First, we weren't seated very promptly when we arrived-always forgivable if everything else goes well...but...
We ordered the El Muy- a chicken or beef taco and cheese enchiladas. Whatever arrived in the chicken taco was bright pink and tasted like canned tuna. The cheese enchiladas were to come with a ranchero sauce, but they came with a tasteless beef sauce instead. The beans were overcooked and sticky, and while the queso was the only thing decent tasting, it was runny.
Maybe all these issues occured because because it was the end of the night, but when we complained to our waiter/the manager, he was barely bothered by our pink chicken taco.
All in all, there was nothing redeeming about eating at this restaurant. Highly advise against it.
