The Scene
Mod lighting and rich dark-wood furnishings set the tone of subdued and simple elegance. Asian stitch works don the walls, while the tepanyaki and sushi bars add a charge of the contemporary. Austin's Westlake set and Davenport Village shoppers drop in for a cut-above casual dining where business suits sup next to trendy, casual diners.
The Food
An extensive menu showcases Chinese and Japanese house specials and favorites, served with zeal by friendly staff. Dine on savory grilled yellowtail collar (hamachi kama) or a smart Chinese pairing of lobster and chicken (Dragon and Phoenix Dancing) for two. Tamago sushi, a good gauge of a sushi chef's overall skills, exceeds expectations. Vegetables are fresh beyond dispute. Fried calamari, while tender, is overpowered by a spiced salt. House special coconut-curry shrimp dances in a delectable sauce, but doesn't have nearly the kick promised. Top off your meal with fragrant, flavorful red bean ice cream.

HOW IS THIS RESTAURANT STILL OPEN? Ordered shrimp and chicken hibachi take out with salad and soup. EVERYTHING WAS TERRIBLE! Shrimp was way too salty and the chicken was painfully dry and tasteless. Salad dressing tastes like crunchy mustard. After tasting everything, me and my girlfriend decided to throw it out and grab McDonald's (not kidding). This is the first review I've ever written. It was such a terrible experience, I felt everyone should know about it."

My husband and I went tonight. We absolutely love sushi and were just not impresed with Dragon Gate. We tried the calamari, which was the oddest thing I have ever seen! I am used to round calamari served with a sauce, where tonight it was little sticks served with chopped onions and jalapenos. What?! We also tried the 360 roll and the Spicy Crab roll. I just wasn't impressed. It tasted to me like the seafood was frozen. When our bill came and it was $71 I was just shocked. We could have gone to Truluck's for about $20 more. :-( If you try this place I would stick with the Chineses menu...the couple next to us ordered Chinese food and seemed to enjoy it.

I used to work nearby and would go here often because it is VERY fast and was conveniently located. The first month or two that it was open, it was wonderful, but it steadily went downhill since then. The sauces are bland. The food is mediocre. It's still fast and convenient, but there are much better places around town. If you go for the sushi, that's much better than the traditional chinese dishes, but it takes MUCH longer to get them, so plan accordingly.
