response to PoshGirl32 (4/7/09):
Murphy Lee attended daycare 90 times from 8/30/07 to 4/2/09--translating into almost 900 hours of daycare.
We always feel terrible when a dog is injured while in our care. We do a lot of things to prevent injury at Southpaws. In fact, I was moving toward Murphy to remove him from the play area just before the fight happened.
Please remember that there are two sides to every story. There was no innocent victim in this situation--the other dog was injured also.
response to AustinGirl (4/14/09):
We don't know this reviewer, and she doesn't know us at Southpaws. She has never brought a dog to visit here, or been here herself. This reviewer made a comment at the request of PoshGirl32.
response to Erika H. (10/4/12):
(NOTE: Erika did not pay an outstanding bill at Southpaws, despite being contacted repeatedly between late June and early October 2012. This review was written the same day that Southpaws threatened to bring legal action for theft of service.)
Erika seems to have been embarrassed and angered by this situation. Had Erika actually been this dissatisfied with our service, she would have reviewed us months ago. Instead, she reviewed us negatively in retaliation. Erika did mail a payment check the same day, and included a nasty note that stated that she would be "writing reviews of your very poor business everywhere I can imagine". All we ever wanted was to be paid for the service that we provided.
Do not take your dog here! The staff is disorganized, and unfriendly. The place is dirty and smelly and my dog was terrified to go there. There are so many wonderful playschools in town, but this is not one of them.
Go Here If You Love Your Dog!. We moved to Austin in 2006 and needed help with getting a very submissive/shy shelter dog trained and socialized. Under Southpaws' care and guidance, she has completely flourished. We've been in love with them since! She cannot wait to get there and starts going nuts in the car as we're driving down S. Lamar. The dogs get to play in air-conditioned comfort, within size-based groups all day. They have access to as much fresh water as they can drink, music and plenty of toys. They are taken outside several times a day for potty breaks to an area that is roughly 1,000 s.f., where they can find more drinking water, a wading pool and even a mister/sprinkler for those really hot days. The owners are true animal lovers and are completely devoted to their four-legged clients. That attitude is paid back in spades by the dogs and the loyal client base they have developed over the years. I also board here when I travel and it brings me untold peace of mind to know my dog is never left alone, as someone is always on site. Sadly, my job took us back to Houston earlier this year. We remedy not being weekly regulars by making frequent weekend trips (a minimum of 2x a month), just so my dog can spend the night and play with her old pals. If you love your dog, you really need to give these folks a try -- you will not be disappointed!
Terrible Place and unsafe: do not bring your dog here. This place is not safe. They allow too many dogs and do not supervise the dogs very much. There have been several fights and numerous dogs have landed in vet's office. Yes, they are cheaper than most places, but it's worth the extra few dollars a day to ensure your dog is safe. The owners do not have control over these dogs and allow fights to occur for minutes, not seconds.
Do not send your dog here. If you love your dog, do not bring it here. My boxer was severely hurt at this place, he was bit over 12 times by a pit-bull mix and spent 2 months at the vet with deep puncture wounds and a bacterial infection from the bites... costing me thousands of dollars and a lot of sleepless nights. My dog is no longer with me, and I blame South Paws. Sonya and Tim do not have enough staff to watch the dogs and break up fights in a timely manner. I get that fights happen, but letting the fight go on as long as they did and not breaking it up and to allow my dog to endure that much suffering is unbearable - the pit-bull was in daycare the next day while my dog was fighting for his life at the vet's office, with 5 emergency surgeries in one week. South Paws sent a card to my dog, and refused to take any responsibility. They are the cheapest doggie daycare in town for a reason.
Play hard, nap later.
At this doggy daycare the dogs get to play all day in an air-conditioned facility. They're not stuck in a cage all day like at some other boarding places.
After a day at daycare my dog falls asleep as soon as we get home in the evening and sleeps through most of the next day as well. The owners of this place are wonderful. They are more than dedicated to the dogs that play here. I highly recommend Southpaws.
