Sushi awesome/ bar another story
by doc246 at Citysearch
i was suprised by the amount of sushi and the quality i was very pleased! When it came to the bar i was not impressed what so ever. There is a bartender that looked like a wax character. He wouldnt stop talking about comic books. HE even yelled at a waitor infront of me. Suggestions hire a new bartender that can carry a conversation with an adult.
Great sushi, even better service!

We were visiting Austin from Denver and had a wonderful experience at Maiko! Try the avocado tempura with the jalapeno relish - yummy!
Best so far

Been on a quest for a decent sushi place for nearly three years. So far, Maiko is the winner. The rolls don't have quite the flavor, pop and presentation I'd gotten used to in my last home city, but they're pretty good.
This was the first restaurant in Austin in which I received really good service, which husband and I still find infrequently at best. An order misunderstanding on our first visit was cleared up quickly and without fuss. In general, the waitstaff is fairly knowledgeable about the menu and quick to find out answers that they don't know.
We happened in once on a Sunday and were offered a choice of seating, with bar seating being eligible for happy hour specials. The specials, by the way were great. Think it was half price off a certain list of rolls and cheap sake, though I may have that wrong.
I'm still searching for awesome sushi that makes me giggle and drool, but til I find that, Maiko is a pretty good stand in.
- Pros: Excellent Sunday specials
- Cons: Nothing major
Below par food, bleh atmosphere, horrible management

I work down the street from Maiko and finally visited it for the first time and last time. Upon walking in, the hostess, who was chatting with another employee didn't even look our way and took 5 minutes to acknowledge us before seating us. The reaon we went to the bar was because we read online that they had a special on Tuesdays for $1 sake bombs. We ordered our food and drinks and our waitress was decent and as helpful as she could be without knowing much about the food. The food was not special, Austin has much better sushi and Japanese fusion restaurants to offer. When the check came, we noticed we had not received the special we had initially come in for because we were seated in the wrong side of the restaurant. My friend talked to the manager and we were both incredibly disappointed in the way she reacted. She talked to us like it was our fault we did not know we had to sit 10 feet away from where we were seated to receive the special. When my friend told her we were not offered an option of seating, she said they don't ask anyone where they want to be seated. The manager, Lisa? or Linda? was curt, rude, and obviously does not care about customer satisfaction at all. We were extremely disappointed in this restaurant overall and do not understand how it received any good ratings. THERE ARE MUCH BETTER RESTAURANTS IN AUSTIN THAT HAVE HIGHER QUALITY FOOD, SERVICE, AND ATMOSPHERE.
- Pros: none
- Cons: sushi, food, general manager
