Dubstep Sundays! – I'm a huge fan of Dubstep and this place delivers the nasty beats every sunday with a killer sound system. If you are into dubstep you know its nothing without the BASS! Barcelona delivers and has killer Dj's from local to around the globe... Only place in town I know of that has a dedicated dubstep night besides Plush which has it every Wedsnesday... Best place to be on Sunday night!
Never been here – This review should be deleted. Just testing something out. This review should be deleted. Just testing something out.
Its okay... – I have been here many times because I have friends that work there. Overall it is not too bad. The drinks are decently priced and made. The layout of club is nice especially if you and some friends hang out in the lil upper VIP area or on the couches. Lil dance floor as well. The absolute worst part of this bar is the DJ. I have been nearly a dozen times and I swear I hear Michael Jackson, Criss Cross, Naughty by Nature, and all those other ppl I was ready to stop hearing from the 90s!! It drives me nuts and I predict it like clock work every time.
Anywho, I have been told by staff that on Thursdays (which I have never been), they play much better music making the crowd much better as well. I hope its true!
nice to be on your list of bar hop night – Not a place that I would spend all night at but it's a great stop if you're bar hoping one evening with the gals. The space is nicely put together and the music is mixed fairly well. I would definitely recommend it as a start for some drinks.
Dangerous – WORST PLACE IN AUSTIN!!!! I just got done looking at their website and myspace. THANKS FOR THE LAUGH!!! International DJs seeking them out! Come on, who's writing this stuff? I've only seen the weakest of the weak local DJs play here. The staff has serious anger management and violence issues. Everytime my girlfriend and I pass by this place we see someone getting kicked out with more than necessary violence by some big dumb ape suffering from roid rage. Also the door guys hound girls to come in with really rude and often sexual remarks. I feel uncomfortable even passing them with my girlfriend. The few times that we have met friends there for a drink, the entire place has this flashy vibe and everyone is dressed in the cheesiest cliche club wear. The drinks are just dumb expensive, but somehow someone always manages to thrw up and stink up the place. They don't even serve import beer and have NO TAP! What a first class joint huh? If you want to hang out with a bunch of dudes with tight shirts so you can see there nipples and tight pants so you can see their junk and gel in their hair then this is the spot for you. The female to male ratio is terrible and the few girls I have seen there are either butt ugly or just really stupid and boring little girls. All the hotties are busy on West 6th or in the Warehouse District. The music is always some rap or obnoxious techno, being played by some random DJ with no skills that no one has ever heard of. There doesn't seem to be any scene or vibe, just a bunch of douchbags and sluts trying to get drunk before 2am . Try not to fall down the steep steps when coming or going and have fun taking a p in the prison style bathroom with no lock on the door. Rude and violent staff, expensive drinks/no selection, patrons are mostly losers, no parking, smells bad, dingy and dirty underground feel, horrible music and soundsystem always dies or sounds distorted. Bottom line...this place is a big NO!
Avoid At All times,,,,, it stinks – this bar is the worst of its kind all the people are rude and they don't like people newbies or people they don't.
they are just a group people who always hang out and know each other . If you go in, everyone is going to give you a dirty look and start a fight with you. When I went EVERYONE STOPED AND LOOKED AT ME!!!!! like if I was some sort of a freak!(Im not) and this guy who already had a couple of drinks in him. just started a fight with me when I was trying to stop him from, starting a fight with one of my buddies, so he turns to me and starts shocking me, for no good reason, while I was defending my self and wooping his butt, everyone got in and jump me!!! so if you want to get in fight and waste your money on expensive drinks COME to Barcelona, it is the shitiest place on 6th street
A breath of fresh air – Tired of the same old sixth street scene? Then check out Barcelona. My friends and I recently visited the infamous sixth street only to bored with the same-old scene. It was then that we found this "diamond in the rough". We went on a Thursday night and had an excellent time. The bar had booked an excellent set of house DJ's and the atmosphere was alive with energy. People were dancing, drinking, and having a great time. The service was top notch even when the club was at its busiest. We ended up staying there for the rest of the night and having a great experience. The bartender hooked us up with a hokaah and we relaxed in the VIP which was also very cool. So if you're looking for a great place to be seen and have a good time. Check out this Bar. They have certainly earned my repeat business.
Do as you said, not as you would have me believe. – My main beef with this place is their false website advertising. I am a dork who found out about it from reviews on Citysearch. However, when you advertise $1 drinks on Sunday... people expect a drink to be a dollar. Imagine my surprise when my tab came back at $19 for a night's maintenance fee. $3 dollar drinks. Austin's wired. Update your site!
Aside from frugal objections, the act they booked for that night was pretty bad. This band was front by the poorest man's Lenny Kravitz; he smartly chose not to announce his name nor the name of his band, so, I am forced to call him Penny Kravitz. The mic-check lasted a grueling hour; listening to versions of what sounded like Stone Temple Pilot tunes sung by the soberest Scott Weil.
On one of their frequent band breaks, the lead guitarist spewed some nonsense about the smoking ordinance not applying to the "underground clubs'. Clubs under the ground don't apply. By his poor logic, the Sky Lounge would allow smoking because they are elevated above street level. They allow smoking either: because they are too new to have been fined yet or they do what all other Austin bars who look the other way on the issue do -- tell you it's your lookout and to pound sand if you are caught amber-glow handed.
I'm boring myself so let's close with a statement of fact -- this bar tries to be Plush with dimly-lit bartops and 'moody' atmospheric lighting but, all said, they widened their aperture but didn't focus. The date went bad and you got stuck with the check.
Spend your money on the honest, my Sunday bedroom rockers.
False advertising on their frontpage:
Sunday - $Dollar Sundays$
All night long - $1 ANYTHING IN THE HOUSE
The place chill in Austin for all restaurant, bar & service industry drinkers!
dance club - one of the few in Austin – This is kind of a cool place... very few like this in Austin, but quite prevalent in places like Chicago or NYC. Its a dance club, plays a lot of techno, with other beats going as the night gets older and people get drunker. Not much else to say, staff seemed fine - bouncer should take care not to upset people though less he get his teeth knocked out by some unfriendly customer... probably new to the job. atmosphere typical of this type club, but rare in Austin.
Great vibe and cool design – I've seen this bar/club since it's opening. In fact, I have held a private event at Barcelona during SXSW Film Festival. The space has a great energy about it. The music totally kicks through an incredible sound system. If you want to be in the throws of the music and dance, you hang out in the middle or back, if you want to take a break and sip on your favorite cocktail you sit at the front bar. It's so cool that you can see shadows of the Sixth street foot traffic through the ceiling of the front bar. Not to mention the "oh so cool" suggestive design behind the bar! In fact, if you look closely, you'll find many interesting designs that take suggestive forms throughout the place. Oh, and don't test the little red stones on end the inverted clear flower pots. Yes, they do pop off and Yes, the designer of the bar will become very irritated if he knows you screwed with his design!
Oh, as for the previous comment by StephenSmith, I know that the staff is part of the experience of any bar, but don't let one bad apple sour the barrell. Just ask to speak to the manager next time. Everyone I've encountered at Barcelona are super cool.
