Austin >Sandy Kurtzman Master Colorist
First of all, when you go to her website you'd think she were Warren Tricomi with her prices and the stuff she writes on there. False. She is unprofessional from the way she dresses, to the house, to the mess in her kitchen and all the random people that come into the house that she stands there and talks to while she's doing your hair...
Don't get me wrong, Sandy is a very nice lady. But being nice doesn't mean you have a good business. Her salon is located in a house, way up in some remote neighborhood in Austin. I came to her because I had stupidly put black hair dye in my hair about 6 months before seeing her. I paid 50 dollars for a consultation with her where she made me feel very comfortable and confident about removing the color and getting to the shade I wanted. She even had me look through a magazine and choose what color I wanted to get to. We agreed on a light brown and a price of 250. Sounded reasonable to me for a color remover, cut, and color. When I came back, we did the color remover and my hair came out a unattractive brassy brown. After the cut she started blow drying my hair leaving me wondering if she forgot about the color. I mentioned it later and she told me that not everyone needed a color after the remover. After she was done, she then asked that I pay 300 or was 315 for the full service in front of some man that I had came in to visit her. This made me feel very uncomfortable and I told her no that I was only going to pay the 250 we agreed on esp. since we did NO color. I left her 25 dollar tip as I usually do because I have so much hair and it tends to take longer to work with.
Months after having the color remover done, my hair STILL smelt " like gun powder, nair, awful, disgusting". Those are just some of the things people would say when I was in the room, because my hair smelt SO horrible. My boyfriend couldn't even sleep next to me because the smell would make him sick. After a month and half the smell finally faded...but the black came back. Frustrated and upset after paying almost 300 dollars, I went to ANOTHER salon to see if they could lighten it since "there was no longer color in my hair." The salon told me they'd charge me 100+ to lighten it because I still had lots of black color in my hair. The black color that I paid 275 bucks to have removed from my hair. I called Sandy and told her that the black came back and she told me to come in so she could have a look. She looked at my hair and suggested we do the remover again....I said no because it didn't work the first time and it smelt horrible, and she also wanted me to pay for the color remover! I left frustrated that I would never get this awful color out of my hair.
A month later I traveled to San Fran for the holidays and got my hair done at a trendy salon called Alcheme. A man named Guido did my hair and I told him about my experience, and what I wanted done. He worked his magic, got all the black out of my hair and died it a nice brownish/red shade and only charged me 180! I absolutely love the color and only wished he lived here in Texas.
So basically, 2 things here. Don't ever dye your hair black, and if your an hairdresser don't tell someone you can do something when you can't and don't overcharge them for something that you didn't even come close to doing.
