Best Sushi in Austin – Every time I go I'm thrilled, I try to eat there once a week. Usually in the afternoon for lunch when it's still quite and i have the place to myself. It's by far the best sushi I've ever had, they are really good at harmonizing flavors, everything comes out perfect, every time. Try the sushi bomb and the volcano roll with the cold cucumber sake, it's SOOO good! I've had EVERYTHING this place makes at least once, Now I'm working on trying everything once more :)

Every person I've ever taken has agreed and also loved it!

Great Sushi – I have never had a disappointing experience at Tomo. Every roll or sushi I have tried has been wonderful with interesting combination of flavors & ingredients. The service has always been good and the staff attentive. Tomo is one of the two sushi spots in Austin that I know I can depend on to be fresh and fantastic EVERY time I go.

Favorite restaurant in town – I moved to Austin from the Bay Area last year with my girlfriend and spent the first 6 months or so looking for the best Sushi restaurant we could find. After going to Tomo for the first time our search was over. Hard as it was for us to admit, it probably surpasses our favorite sushi place from the Bay Area. They have unique and different rolls (our favoites being the 007 and the Volcano). While other reviewers have mentioned the sushi chefs being drunk, they have a good time, have never been rude to us, and make a damn good roll. We usually sit at the bar because we enjoy the chefs and Steve the owner.

It is a small place and is generally quite packed for this reason I think the owner and the other chefs can enjoy themselves and have a good time knowing that the business is a success and will continue to be. They aren't a new restaurant that feels the need to put on an act to impress those who think all staff members should be stuffy.

If you are one of these people who think that because you are required to act "professional" at your job that everybody should be as miserable as you are then this might not be the place for you. However, if you like great Sushi and don't mind the staff enjoying themselves at the same time then I highly recommend Tomo's.

Inmates running the asylum – All of the rolls tasted the same to me, and they were prepared by a staff of clowns, led by an obnoxious sushi chef suffering from one of the worst cases of Napoleon complex I've had to endure. He was boastiing about his prowess with the ladies, taking multiple shots of beer or sake, and had the knfe skills of a uncoordinated lefthanded toddler using righthanded safety scissors Some of my nigiri looked like it was hand torn from larger piece and plopped on to a misshapen mound of rice. Getting drunk during food service to paying customers is wrong on so many levels, and I'm shocked this place actually seems to encourage such behavior. I'm neither a stick in the mud; nor am I uptight. I simply expect a chef to put their best foot forward every day, and this is simply impossible when you're drinking. The results were born out in the food and overall experience. This place is a joke.

Wonderful experience; always back for more! – Tomo is a place I come back to for sushi every time I'm in town. My folks introduced me to the place when I was in high school. I've since graduated and moved to Missouri for college, but EVERY time I'm back in town, I make sure to stop at Tomo.

The chefs and staff are personable, the restaurant is tastefully posh, without being pretentious.

The sushi is divine. I almost starve myself during the day when I know I'm going to Tomo for dinner! It's that amazing. Service is prompt, for a full house. Tomo is ALWAYS packed for weekend dinners (something that testifies to it's greatness), so you may have to wait a little for your rolls. Unless you're on an awkward first date, this shouldn't be an issue.

It is a small restaurant, so you may want to call ahead to see how long you'll have to wait. But trust me: Tomo sushi is worth waiting for!

best sushi in austin – Reviewers calling Tomo average or bad sushi either got very unlucky on their visit or do not know sushi. This is the best sushi in town because the fish and vegetables are good quality and extremely fresh, the rolls are well planned in terms of balance in taste and texture, and the nori is superbly prepared. I'm talking your teeth slice right through, never chewy.

My favorite original roll is the ridiculously named Angry Beaver. The jalapeno in the middle is always crunchy.

The chefs are jovial, and sometimes I do get the impression that they drink too much for people who are preparing complicated meals. I find that unprofessional, but they've never been rude to me. The wait staff is always pleasant and prompt.

The wait can be long because the restaurant is simply too small for the crowd it attracts. It has begun to attract pretty, hip people who seem to be there to be seen, but there are real sushi lovers there too.
