Editorial Review for Cibo – by Tara Hall
In Short
Just a stone's throw from the Capitol, local favorite Will Packwood's narrow, glass front trattoria bustles with downtown foot traffic. Simple tables placed succinctly around the breezy restaurant seat metropolitan patrons hungry for fresh, inspiring dishes. Breakfast brings handmade pastries and French-pressed coffee, while lunch and dinner offerings like house-made gnocchi, Venetian tapas and pressed paninis exhibit Packwood's Italian heritage. An expansive wine list representing all regions of Italy offers recommended pairings.

I read all of the negative reviews and went with an open mind - really wanting to enjoy it! The wine was great - I'll give them that. The service was slow, despite being close to empty when we arrived. My husband and I split several dishes because the mains were really expensive and, frankly, not that tempting looking. The guy at the next table got the scallops - 3 pitiful scallops on a very LONG plate - for something like $36 ($12/scallop?!). Calamari salad was o.k. - the best thing we had. The white bean soup was clearly re-heated (uneven temperature) and average - could have been from a can (granted, a decent can but still...). The risotto was terrible! Kind of undercooked and gluey. My husband didn't finish his and that says a lot. I think our bill (including 3 glasses of wine combined) was $120 with tip. Oh - and it took forever to get bread and when we did it was cold (like "just out of the refrigerator" cold - not even just room temperature). So, we gave up on dessert and went to the coffee place next door for 2 lattes and a cookie - a relative BARGAIN at $7! All in all, our Cibo experience was just kind of annoying. Too much pretension and not enough substance.
Pros: good wine
Cons: cheap furniture, broken sink, pricey menu, disappointing food, slow service

Cibo is delicious. One of, if not, the best restaurant in Austin. The food has a simplicity to it but is layered with so many flavors and nuances. Almost too sophisticated for the Austin food scene. Great wine. Great service. Fantastic, intelligent food. Do not expect tomato sauces and lasagna, this is authentic rustic Italian. Bravo!
Pros: delicious and unique
Cons: too expensive to eat every other day
