Editorial Review for Kona Grill – by Andrea Loera

In Short
This contemporary restaurant in The Domain provides an upscale dining experience with an affordable price tag. An open kitchen delights diners seated at nearby tables and cozy banquettes, while a large aquarium (separating the bustling bar area) makes for interesting conversation. The menu is a mix of Hawaiian- and Asian-flavored dishes including macadamia nut chicken, lemongrass crusted swordfish, noodle dishes and steaks. The sushi menu features varied rolls as well as some in-house creations.

I don't recommend eating here at all. The food is boring and service is slow on the patio. Their drinks are weak, walk to Joe DiMaggio's for happy hour for some serious alcohol like greygoose martini for $5 during happy hours, red wines (la cream-pinot noir), white wines(la crema-chardonnay) and many specials from 3-6 p.m Everyday!

A friend took me to lunch yesterday (Feb. 9) at Kona Grill in the Domaine. What a sophisticated, serene atmosphere! The waiter, Jason, was cordial and professional. I decided to order the pulled pork sandwich, something I don't usually order, but it sounded delicious. Beautiful presentation, some of the worst food I have had in such an upscale restaurant. The sandwich had small bits of pork in overly sweet sauce. The main filler was skin and fat. I couldn't eat it. The slaw was so drenched in mayo dressing, it was nauseating. The huge thick onion ring was barely passable. When I ordered the ginger peach tea, a bottle and glass of ice was delivered -- more expensive, no refills. This was the kind of meal I would have sent back -- except I was being treated and didn't want to spoil the ambiance. I may go back and give Kona a second chance, but I definitly won't order the pork sanwich. It should be pulled from the menu.
