Wonderful happy hour minus the LOUD music!.
I WOULD give this establishment a five star review, but my repeated experience at their Wednesday night happy hour subtracts two stars.
On Wednesday night from 10:00PM-12:00AM, Zocalo offers two dollar margaritas and free nachos. They have indoor and outdoor seating, but don't bother going in if the outdoor seating is taken. Indoors, there are plenty of tables, a great conversation environment.
However, a featured DJ is also a feature of the happy hour. The DJ plays dance style music and a dance hall volume....even though there is no dance floor. The loud music makes it nearly impossible to hear what your neighbor is saying.
On three separate occasions I've asked the manager to turn the music down have been curtly informed that the music is part of the atmosphere. I'm not the only one who thinks the music is too much. If you do come to happy hour, you will find that people would rather stand on the steps outside and drink even when there are open tables inside because the music is too loud.
We came all the way from Cali for the churros. We were spending our daughter's 11th Bday in Austin and she was churro obsessed. I searched the web for the best churros in Austin and all signs pointed to Zocalo. And we were not disappointed. Katie and the staff were great. The food was wonderful. And the churros were "sick", according to the birthday girl. (That's a good thing for us older than 11) My friend lamented that it was so close to her office that it could become a habit. Thanks for a great experience.
Totally Austin!.
while their food is "standard" dishes: enchiladas, tacos ect, they create unique ways to deliver: example instead of regular soft taco enchiladas, they stack crispy chalupas on top of eachother with goodies smushed in between
YUM!
Fun brunch. There migas were great and my boyfriend liked his huevos verdes. Coffee could be better so next time I'll wait and go across the street to Medici. But the vibe of the place is fun. I would definitely meet friends there next time.
GREAT mexican Cafe. Went there for lunch today having never been there. You walk in, order, pay and sit down, they bring the food to you. Having never been there I had lots of questions and the hostess was more than ready to help. I viewed on the menu that you could substitute this or that for the rice n beans. I asked if instead of this n that can I sub guacamole? She said, "absolutely." I also wanted chips for the guac but it costs extra, I paid wanting it for the guac. I fixed my Tea and sat down. I had ordered the beef tacos which come as an order of three. Most beef tacos come bland as hell with NO seasoning. Not these, the beef was seasoned with cumin and several other spices and was great. The beef was sauteed with poblano peppers as well. They had enough cheese, and enounh pico along with a rojas sauce to pour on. I also had the option of whole wheat tortillas which I took. These were DEE-Lish. The guac was standard fare but generous. The chips were almost puffy and very fresh and good. The chips came with two salsas, both warmed on the stove top. Very mild and very good. A rojas, and a verde, the green was a little more spicy, but they were gingo sauces for sure. With iced tea the bill was $11 something, pretty good deal for the food I got, and pretty tasty food as well. My server was really helpful and even ran to the back to get a question answered. The fact that I almost pestered her, (she was smokin hot) didn't faze her a bit. You are gonna love this place.
Mediocre Queso, but great entree. Zocalo is sister bar to Galaxy Cafe which I find for the amount of money you spend you do get A LOT for your money and quality food along with that. But that also comes with some mediocre food as well. I found the queso blanco not very appetizing it was a kind of chunky cheese with more pico in it than cheese. The fish tacos had a nice pineapple pico prepared for them which I liked. The cafe was very nice looking, the windows allow such a vase amount of light to the entire cafe that is so pretty.
Healthful Mexican makes its way to Clarksville's popular West Lynn Street..
In Short
Like its nearby sister eatery Galaxy Cafe, Zocalo swims in color inside and out--in this case, stark white and lime green. The clean, bright design foreshadows the fresh, bold menu featuring healthier versions of standard Mexican fare (ground turkey tacos, grilled fajitas, stuffed burritos) alongside creative concoctions like crispy stacked enchiladas and the house specialty, chilaquiles. Weekends draw a crowd enjoying mimosas and a special brunch menu (10am-2pm) including traditional dishes like eggs Benedict and huevos rancheros.
