To my knowledge, Sagra is the only locally-owned Italian restaurant in town with dedicated vegan and vegetarian menus. But where oh where is the cheese-covered pizza?! Ah, there it is -- with eight pizza varieties as a matter of fact, including a classic Margherita and an eat-when-not-on-a-date Aglio (smothered in roasted garlic). Sagra's clever solution to pizza's most beloved ingredient? The surprisingly melty, mouth-coating pistachio cheese.
worst experience EVER – nothing purchased is local. back of house is a disgusting display of cross contamination at it's worst. You would think with an open line they would clean it better. yipes. I saw the owner go from drinking wine at the bar to grabbing customers food from their plates to "rearrange" it. All without washing his hands. He was obviously under the influence as his speech was slurred as he yelled at the kitchen staff. The owners wife actually told a server to reuse the paper covering on the table. When the server hesitated she chastised him and said "I'm the owner, just do it". All in all the place is not worth the hype they put out. I've seen the owner/Chef shopping at the restaurant depot! nothing local about that place. I've been all over the world to eat and the worst places ever are the ones where the owners think they are better than they are. It's a shame.
We appologize for whatever caused you to write such a hurtful review but everything you wrote is untrue!We received a 90 on our last health insp. not bad for a restaurant in a 150 yr old house!Cross contamination, touching food NO! Our kitchen is open everyone would see it! You shop at restaurant depot?You must be in the business(or possibly very recently left, maybe Sagra?)you must know that it is impossible to use all local ingredients, currently about 30% of our ingredient are local.Come in and give us another try and you can have local onions,cherry/heirloom tomatoes,watermelon,mushrooms,eggs,herbs,peaches,goat cheese,olive oil,carrots,fennel and squash just to name a few. We are a ALWAYS try to use local companies first! Most of our employees have been with us for years and we are very respectful to them. All of your personal attacks are unfounded, untrue and just plain mean. Review web sites are great but sometimes you can?t believe anything you read.
Great Place – We had a wonderful dinner in a lovely, gracious room with great food and warm, attentive service. The seafood risotto and steak were very nice. The cheese plate was terrific and the hospitality was generous. The prices are more than reasonable for the food and service quality. An elegant but not stuffy destination. As perfect for neighborhood dining as for out-of-towners.

Mediocre food, slow service and loud atmosphere – After reading the mixed reviews we went here anyway, much to our dismay it was as terrible as some of the reviewers suggested. We were seated immediately because we had a reservation, but the tables were so crammed in that I felt a little claustrophobic. When the rest of our party arrived we placed our cocktail orders and appetizers. It took almost 40 minutes for those to come out and there was no bread with our olive oil flight. The waitress while a little scattered was very apologetic and told us the olive oil appetizer would be on the house. We placed our entree order and a bottle of wine for the table.....two hours later our food arrived. Our waitress had checked in with us several times during the wait and again was very apologetic admitting that there was no excuse for this kind of service. At this point several of the tables around us had already eaten and were leaving. We were baffled and had it not been my friends birthday I am sure we would have left in a storm, but it's not often we are able to spend time with friends and the noise level had finally dropped to hear what they were saying. When our food finally arrived it was accompanied by the manager who said that all the food for the evening would be on the house for the terrible experience. Wow....ok so maybe this is just a off night? No. My husband's risotto was undercooked and still crunchy. My friends steak was not seasoned and the fried outside was mushy and it was covered in what could only be described as tomato sauce over mashed potatoes. The rest of the table was fairly satisfied - or could it be that we had now been there almost 3 hours and had cocktails and wine? I will not go back here and I will be sure to tell all of my friends the same. Unfortunately the food just wasn't good enough to put up with the service.
We are one of the top rated restaurants on Citysearch. I am glad your friends enjoyed their meal and were satisfied with their entire experience. As you noted we were very sorry about the service and didnt charge your entire table because of our errors. We are a very small family owned/operated restaurant (http://bit.ly/sagrastatesamn) in a very difficult time and reviews like these hurt. We had hoped that buying your entire parties meal would waylay any misgivings you had towards us. We really do want every customer to be 100% satisfied and feel that our very good ratings with citysearch reflect this(we were voted best Italian in Austin). And yes the Bistecca alla Pizziola is a 14 oz. Certified Angus rib eye,(cooked in our wood burning pizza oven) with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, marinara, and fresh mozzarella yum its delish!!
Really friendly people – I have heard about Sagra before as being a great place , so I decided to go there with some friends last Saturday. I was really impressed with how friendly everybody was. The halibut was really good and the cat cake was also really good. My friend all enjoyed their meals and we are going again next week. A good discovery

cozy on a cold day – We tried Sagra at the suggestion of a friend. It was fantastic! It is lovely inside, the staff is attentive, and the food is wonderfully prepared - all at a very reasonable price. The calamari appetizer,antipasti salad, and tiramisu dishes were excellent. I ordered the chicken san daniel - it was the best!
Great Food – Back for the 3rd time in 2 years. Brought a couple of friends from Houston and my wife. We had a vegan, a meat eater, a fish eater, and pork eater. All were well taken care of. The staff were extremely attentive and especially to the vegan orders. The sparkling rose wine was the cap to one of the best meals we've have had in Austrin in a long time. Will probably returnagain.
Christmas Eve dinner – I'm amazed by the 4.5 stars. We had one of the worst meals of our lives here last night. If we hadn't been someone's guest and it hadn't been xmas eve, I think all seven of us would have sent our dinners back. The maccheroni al forno was elbows swimming in tepid cream covered with dry crumbs, the calamari was fish gum rings, the butternut squash lasagna was like bad pumpkin pie, the linguini con vongola I didn't get a bite of, but my sister said she could barely eat it. My husband and I split the seven seas special. The sauce and pasta were good, the clams were good but tiny, the salmon at the center, though, was nearly fish jerky. Just truly awful food.
Like I said, we didn't want our hostess to feel bad on Christmas Eve so we said nothing, so I'm posting here hoping somebody at the restaurant will see a complaint.
Great food and they treat you like family – My husband and I are from Houston and we often dine at Sagra when we come into Austin. It's our favorite place. We love the food, the service and the atmosphere. Last week we were heading to San Antonio, when the mood for Sagra struck. We called ahead and made a detour. As usual we were seated immediately by a lovely, attentive waiter. From our table the street was very visible and our daughter suddenly remarked that she thought she saw a "famous" person come into the restaurant. She did indeed. A very well-known woman and an equally well-known man were also dining at Sagra that afternoon and they were seated right next to us. What made the afternoon special for us was that in spite of the high profile table next to us, our waiter (and indeed the entire staff) treated our family like we were their best customers.
A delicious, memorable meal served by lovely people.
Really Wanted to Like Sagra – My husband and I dined at Sagra on Monday night. I have to say that I really had high hopes for this place. First, the location is perfect for us and the atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice. It got a little loud toward the end of our meal but that's to be expected in a small place and it didn't bother us a bit. Our waiter (sorry I didn't get his name) was excellent. He recommended a good white wine for me and red for my husband. I really liked that he offered us a taste prior to our making a decision on the wine. I also liked that the other waiter working at the time and our waiter basically worked together. If the other waiter saw that a plate needed clearing at our table, he cleared it. Nice teamwork.
We ordered the appetizer of the day, Crab Brouschetta. It was a pretty bland crab spread on bread that was too hard. I noticed another customer trying to cut her Brouschetta with a knife and was unable to do so. There was no choice but to pick it up and eat it (which is what I did anyway).
We decided to try their pizzas since they came with a lot of positive reviews. I ordered the Prosciutto Arugula and my husband ordered the Tartufo. My pizza would have been okay but the center of the crust was soggy. There was no way to actually pick up a piece and eat it because the toppings would fall off the soggy part. I usually love prosciutto and arugula together but it somehow doesn't work with pizza sauce. My husband's pizza was interesting in that it had a top crust but he said the flavors again just didn't work together. I tasted it and really thought that the truffle oil didn't belong in that pizza.
Anyway, we didn't complain to our waiter cause we just didn't feel like ending our dinner on that note. Also, we had absolutely no complaints about the waiter or the restaurant itself. Unfortunately, we just didn't enjoy the food.
