Olivia is a delectable little spot any time of day, full of good vibes and farmer's market spoils, but I'm going to recommend it especially for your Valentine's Day brunch. There's a little chicken coop out back that provides the eggs for their glorious eggs florentine, embellished with buttery biscuits and Austin's favorite guilty pleasure, pork belly. Start Valentine's Day here with a hearty meal, and you'll have a whole day's worth of lovin' in you -- knowmsayin'?
Great place for Unique Food. Service was great - food was amazing! A place to take people visiting South Austin.
Stone/Glass/Wood Austintacious building is the best thing about this place.
and the great rock fence on the deck at the entrance - very creative.
The servers are pleasant, very solicitous. The building is what I call Schlotzsky's Style (check out Schlotzsky's main restaurant on So. Lamar closer to downtown), and it certainly spruces up a shabby neighborhood.
But the prices! I have a hard time paying $15 for a glass of wine. And $5 for what amounted to McDonald's French fries that came with ketchup and a bland mayo-type sauce.
To meet a friend for a drink (one glass of wine each, which thankfully were topped off gratis by the sweet bartender, who was maybe feeling a little guilty?) the order of McDonald fries and some kind of fried quail wings in a syrupy sauce for $42, before our 20% tip - well, that's a lot for 5:15 on a Tuesday afternoon.
I guess the owner/chef/whatever must have a big following. All I can say is "I've been there, done that." Try Crissi's Market/Wine Bar nearby on So. Congress Ave. - it is infinitely better!
Dissappointing service and food.
Olivia's is a stylish new restaurant that features local ingredients and a menu that is updated daily. However alluring this may sound, it was not worth the price. Our service was slow and at best perfunctory. Our server's personality was not inviting and we frequently got the impression of being inconvenienced. My spouse and I have many years of restaurant experience and our disgruntled server made it painful to leave 15%.
We ate the escargot w/ mushrooms, raw oysters, mussels, beet salad and ribeye. The wine was the best part. The list, while pricey, did offer a good variety of French wines and we enjoyed a nice bottle @ 41$. The escargot was rubbery and very garlicky, the mussels were over salted as well as a side of greens that accompanied the ribeye. The sauce on the rib eye was overbearing and actually masked the flavor of the steak. The beet salad was like eating a can of pickled beets with a dalop of goat cheese on top.
After spending 200$ on dinner and trying numerous items on the menu, we were very unhappy with the experience at Olivia's and will not return for a second round.
Fresh, delicious, well prepared food. My fiance and I visited Olivia for the first time last night and had a great experience. The menu is diverse and interesting, and apparently changes nightly - which ensures you are getting high quality, seasonal product. The freshness of the food was evident in every dish we ordered, and all components of each plate were nicely paired and cooked to perfection. The oysters diablo were great, the homemade pasta with escargot I had was incredible, and my fiance's risotto and scallops were delicious. The highlight of the meal was the lamb's tongue - which was amazingly flavorful and melted in your mouth. I found the portion sizes to be perfect and actually did not find it too expensive for the high quality and innovative fare - we had a bottle of wine, two appetizers, and two entrees for around $100. Can't wait to go back.
Loved it! Great experience, delicious food, but very very pricey! Special occasion friendly, upscale. Great experience and food. Watch out for that bill , prices are equivelent to Eddie Vs or Trulucks. Upscale dining on South Lamar. Gorgeous restaurant, beautiful design of space, much like Uchi. I would go there again. Parking is easy.
Two of us went Sunday night around 7 pm. We were seated in a booth right away. The decor and ambiance were nice, if just a tad bit loud. Our waiter was very friendly, albeit in a more TGIF-hangout way than in a professional upscale scene way. He was knowledgeable enough about the menu and wine list, however. We were brought the check WITH our dessert though, which was a considerable faux-pas and made us feel we were being rushed.
The Food: The price-point was on a par w/ other highest-end establishments in Austin - and this may be partly due to the local sourcing of all the ingredients - but the quality, ultimately, didn't justify it. The menu changes daily. Our almaco tartar was excellent; my pork shank was a bit on the salty side, and my partner's bass with head-on prawns was good, but nothing to write home about. The presentation of the entrees was lacking - mine was simply a bone-in hunk of meat swimming in a pool of gravy with chunks of vegetables half-heartedly strewn about, and a mound of white mashed potatoes. The portions were ample, however. The coda, the sticky toffee cake - highly recommended by the server - was neither creative nor decadent enough, although the accompanying creme fraiche ice cream was nice.
Olivia has some stiff competition next door, and in Austin in general. Let's hope they can stay around long enough for the improvements.
Great modern food.
Olivia offers a great mix of delicious modern cuisine. The interior is great, as well as the service. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The food was great, but the menu has several dishes that I've seen elsewhere. My entree, snapper over white beans, tomatoes, and greens was perfect, but I've had that exact dish at several other places. My girlfriend's risotto was delicious, but nothing new.The wine list is extensive.
I will give them extra points for using locally sourced food for their menu. However, when we arrived at 9 on a Thursday, they were already out of several entrees. There was only a 5 minute wait, which was a pleasant surprise. The prices are a bit high, especially for more common dishes, but this may reflect the local sourcing of the food.
Cool atmosphere and building, Great food. Despite what I read about the service of Olivia's, I had a great experience here. We got there around 9 on a Friday night. We only had to wait 10 - 15 mins for our table and we had a seat at the bar to wait. Our waitress was friendly and answered all our questions. We had an appetizer (oysters were great), a salad and 2 entrees and everything was served just the way I asked for (split the salad, steak med rare). It's a great addition to the city.
The architecture is as crisp as the locally sourced menu of Italian and French delights at this South Austin foodie haunt..
