Thai Fresh is now cooking to order! All dishes save for a few are completely gluten free, and there are plenty of vegetarian options. Huge portions, and extremely fair prices, especially considering their use of local eggs and meats. Take a Thai cooking class with Jam!
Misnomer - Not fresh food.
I had heard about Thai Fresh from a friend and saw some of their advertising. My understanding was that they were using locally sourced foods and preparing them "FRESH". I found it odd that they were almost empty on a Saturday evening at dinner time; even with live music. Then I found out why.
Microwaves do not equal fresh!
Canned ingredients do not equal fresh!
Chemicals and preservatives (even if they are from Thailand) do not equal fresh!
Plus... One of the owner's kids was running through the restaurant and the kitchen; shooting his toy gun at people and throwing balls at employees and clients (didn't appear safe, sanitary or fresh). Their parental approach is apparently very hands off.
This would not be my choice for "FRESH" food. I do not plan on returning.
Very disappointing.
My wife and I love Thai food and thought this place sounded well worth a visit. How wrong we were!
Armed with a Groupon and a healthy appetite we entered the unassuming looking premises only to be greeted by an array of cold dishes. To our horror we realised that this was the so-called 'Fresh Food' and that it would be nuked before being served up to us. What kind of restaurant does this anymore? We could do this style of cooking at home.
Once served up the food was bland and needed 'hot-sauce' just to spice it up. The noodles were overcooked and the Tofu was as hard as rubber. (Not sure that nuking Tofu is recommended???)
What a disappointment. And to make matters worse the owners little boy was playing bat-and-ball right next to our table and he seemed determined to disrupt our lunch at all costs. The owners, who were sat close by, seemed to be oblivious. Not very good customer service. Needless to say we will NOT be returning.
I've had Thai food from mobile kitchens at the side of the road before, it was cooked in front of my eyes and it was delicious and FRESH. It cannot be hard to prepare fresh hot Thai food. Thai Fresh - NOT. I'll be surprised if this business survives for long.
Say what? "Fresh" I don't think so!.
My fiance bought groupons for Thai Fresh which we were very exciting to go and try out. Thankfully we didn't pay full price! As soon as I walked in I noticed the stacks of microwaves and thought to myself what are they using those for?(just kidding)
My fiance and I ordered our food.and It was piping hot. In fact, you might burn your fingers on the bowl. Thank God for Microwaves. Need more?
Eat with caution.
You have to be kidding me!!. This place has to be a joke. Thai Fresh serves cold, or microwaved food. If you get food to go you may want to have them nuke it for you, or else you'll get to your destination with cold "fresh" food. While they microwave it for you, you can watch the people in the kitchen eating out of the cooking bowl (and setting the used fork down for later use). Um, health department? I went one night and saw them wrapping up the leftovers for the next day. If the food you get is already left over, don't plan on having it leftover- no telling how old it would be by then. Oh, and plan to pay for your to-go containers... 50 cents/ea. Not to worry though, they are reusable, so bring them back. Gross. Gross. Gross.
Not Great.
tofu in a microwave????
hard rice?????
I expect to eat like this when I am cooking, not when I order in a restaurant....
If you want tofu go to zen and get fresh cooked with a variety of veggies for 5 bucks
Misleading Title.... When I first move to Austin I was looking for some good Thai food. I found this place and was excited to try because it is only a few blocks from where I live. It was not what I had expected and was more like a deli/cafe than a restaurant. Food choices are behind a large glass deli fridge and not made to order (fresh?). That is first of the deception. My husband, never one to turn away from food, was right away turned off (I could tell) by telling me that he wasn't hungry. I proceeded to order my items and the one woman behind the counter began to scoop the food on the a plate. Immediately, my mind began to turn and I looked for microwaves! Microwaves!! I said is that what you're going to warm my food in? I asked her to make it to-go (yes, it is more expensive) cold! If any readers of this review know anything about microwaves then you'll know that they are the last thing to "fresh"! I won't be returning.
Great concept. I was fortunate enough to tumble upon Thai Fresh in South Austin. They have a counter where you can order authentic Thai dishes prepared fresh, daily. The owner, Jam, and her staff use a lot of fresh, local, seasonal ingredients. She also has a huge wall of spices, sauces, and Thai "groceries" for you to prepare your own creations and I hear she even offers cooking classes a few days a week. I ordered some Pad Thai for lunch and was pleased that it wasn't greasy and was actually kind of "light". If you've been frequenting the usual Thai restaurants, you'll want to give this place a shot. You won't be disappointed.
Very good food, wildly expensive take out.
I just ate a take out dinner from Thai fresh. I had a small lemongrass soup and a large (not huge, a reasonable plate sized container) curry with brown rice. I also bought a hot sauce, which cost one dollar and fifty cents. The food was delicious. My tab was $23.00 and change, not including a dollar for the tip jar.
I need to begin by saying that I have no right to complain about how much I paid because I chose to pay it when I could, after being told what my total was by the slightly embarrassed girl who rung me up, have asked them unpack the food because I couldn't afford to spend that much on take out.
I can, however, say that I will not return to a place that prices liquid based foods BY THE POUND.
I like the shop, the food is very good, and everything seems be between $7.99 and $8.99 a pound. Broth is dense. Curry sauce, much of which is ladled into a container and discarded after the meal, is dense. Moist rice, which is packed into a small container, is dense.
In lean economic times it's a bummer to run out to grab a bite and suffer sticker shock on take out.
This is mostly a note to the owners of a place that I like many things about. Also, I should mention that to dine in they price all the food by the item (a 1 item plate, a 2 item plate, etc.), which makes much more sense. If you like a nice curry, take a seat.
Disappointed in Basil Tofu. I happened upon Thai Fresh today and tried their Basil Tofu. I was not impressed at all. It was a nice space and the portion was large but I found it to be very bland and the tofu was unappealing (and I love tofu!). I'm not sure I'll go back.
