What Our Expert Scouts Say

House Wine
April 07, 2013

Cool, South Austin house tucked away off Barton Springs Road - perfect for hiding out with friends over wine, cheese and conversation. And this might be the only place where you can get a good 1/2 price bottle of wine on Sundays!

Well, wine turns me on at least. House Wine is a laid-back tasting room and mini cafe, tucked inside a cute old bungalow in 78704. Start your night here -- you know where to end it.

Quaint wine bar tucked inside a house with a lovely side terrace and expansive deck out front. Come on Sundays when glasses are 1/2 off.

Great ambiance; needs work on service. Being it was my first visit to House Wine, and with all the hub-bub of Thursday night specials--it was a little overwhelming. Parking is horrific--so don't be surprised if you can't park on site. But, I don't let something as asinine as parking affect my overall recommendation of this place. It was just as the other reviews stated--low key, inviting, and overall fantastic atmosphere, people, and vittles. However, the staff is not the most engaging group of people. There was no friendly banter, no helpful recommendations for cheese/wine pairing, and general lackluster with personality. Once I was able to "figure things out on my own" the evening was wonderful, the wine was memorable, and the cheese trays delectable. Highly recommended for ALL TYPES of people--including those, like myself, that judge wine off of taste, not name. However, for those novice wine drinkers, be prepared to meet frustration if your questions are answered in one word responses; or with no response at all. Everyone's palate, preference, and pocket book differ--and this place definitely meets whatever variation you desire. Cheers!

Great Austin Find!. This was our first visit. The House Wine is a cozy and comfortable atmostphere with earthy, colored rooms in an older home. The furniture is modern and comfy. Art that captures the eye. They offer a great and reasonable wine list and some appetizers. The staff were friendly and helpful. We ordered a bottle of wine and the cheese platter. The wine was very good and the cheese platter had a nice variety served with almonds and a couple truffles. It was very impressive. The place was full. There were couples relaxing and conversing. A group of four playing cards. What a great place to socialize or relax. Very cool place. Very Austin. We'll be back!

What a Treat!. This was a really adorable treat when I went last week on a Thursday. The crowd was low-key and the night air was nice enough to sit under one of the big oak trees out front.

They have specials every weeknight, and we arrived on a night with free appetizers. We enjoyed a nice bottle of red and an excellent cheese plate that the sweet staff brought outside to our little table.

After a while a guitarist set up on the porch and played an acoustic blues set that matched perfectly with the relaxed atmosphere.

It didn't take long to forget how close we were to the chaos of South Lamar.

I'll Be BACK to House Wine!. Been here a few times now. I'm tellin' ya, the time to go is a Sunday night when they offer half-price glasses of wine.

Overall, the prices are very reasonable, and it's closer to home than other wine bars, so both those things are good in my book. The owner-types are very friendly and helpful.

The house atmosphere is very sweet and unassuming. Cheeses and snacks are available, including pretty-good truffles for a dollar. I've been once to hear a mellow guitar, and another time to hear music in the background. Neither time was it so loud that it was hard to talk to friends.

I could see myself coming back here many times.

I will be back. Oh, yes, I will be back

Wine bar in the '04 style provides snob-free swilling, live music and cheese plates.. In Short
Located behind P Terry's burger stand, House Wine makes the wine bar concept accessible to the masses with approachable wines, snob-free service and a South Austin vibe. Expect a relaxed atmospherehich inside the mid-century house with cozy seating areas and artwork on the walls plus a spacious patio with frequent live performances. Small but varied wine list with choose-your-own flights and draft beers brewed in Texas. There are always a handful of bottles with happy hour pricing ($5 a glass and $18 for the bottle). The cheese plates are a must-try with two or three cheese options plus a honey smoked salmon and Tuscan olive cheese spread.
