Service was awful. Waited 1 hour and still the food was not at our table. Will not return
AWESOME food, awesome service!.
I can't say enough good things about this place. I've had a coupon for a while and just kept putting off going. Don't make the same mistake! We went back for a 2nd time within 3 days. Their menu is unique, not like all the other Mexican restaurants. More authentic Mexican dishes, amazing seafood items. The salsa was amazing, very unique. The corn tortillas are homemade and so good. The strawberry margarita was a bit strong, but I'm a wimp. The staff was very friendly and gave excellent service. I believe it's family owned and operated.
And OMG - you HAVE to try the crepes dessert. It rivals any crepe I had in Paris - I can't wait to go back for more!!!
This is on my new list of fave restaurants!
It's lovely that a good restaurant has opened where the old Giss's restaurant used to be. Never could get myself to eat in a restaurant that was named after something left on the floor of a 70's porn flick. Anyhow....
Been by three times now.. first for appetizers, then for dinner with the boss on Monday and we just had to go back tonight. This is good stuff.
Salsa is different than everything I have tasted before. What makes it unique is the chile's they use. If I remember correctly.. sorry I enjoyed three of their watermelon special rita's tonight...Arbor chile is the base and a sweeter chile whose name just escaped me was added. We noshed through a bowl and half. Chips were thicker than most I have had with a great corn taste to them.....Happy Happy Joy Joy dance.
Items we have had and my thoughts:
Par de Huaraches: Cactus.. first time I have had this, and it was yummy with a scoop of their Salsa on it.
Ceviche: Was not as good as I expected, and seemed really over limed if that is possible. Might of been made the day before and steeped to long. I'm willing to give it another shot.
Taquitos al Pastor: Greasy, flavorful, and five to an order, which is plenty to share.
Pescado a la Veracruzana: Excellent fresh fish with crisp veggies in the Veracruzana sauce, served on a banana leaf. Classy, fresh and lite.
Pollo en Mole Blanco with Chicken: Mole was tasty with a deep rustic flavor and the Chicken Breast was cooked to perfection.
Enchiladas de Espinacas: Awesome in flavor with sauteed mushrooms, garlic and almonds. It is quite rich with flavors and possibly some of the best I have ever had.
A dish which wasn't even on the menu since my boss wanted something very hot and spicy with meat. What arrived was sorta like a pork and beef stew with many different chile's in it.. it was HOT, and yet surprising tasty. The chiles all worked well as one. It was a really grand gesture by the owner to even put this together.
Desserts we have had:
Nieve de Mole: Holy Crack... Ice Cream with the Mole sauce.. so refreshing and an interesting combination of flavors
Crepas de Limon con Salsa de Zarzamora: The creamy lemon sauce on the crepes was full of zest.. crepes were a little thick, but still soft and tender to the bite
Pestel de tres leches con Changos Zamoranos: Dear God.. this is what milk was made for.. Thank goodness for cows..creamy, sweet delicious sauce, crumbling cake to soak it all up.. I have to get the recipe for the tres leches.
Look, this is a local, small restaurant, trying to do well in a tough economy. It is a stumble, drop and crawl from my casa. We will continue to patronize it and enjoy the great, caring service. Watching them make little mistakes as they grow into a wonderful experience. So, get off your couch, take off the snuggie which you are filling with farts, and check it out.
Worst Mexican Food.
Sine we go out often we thought we will try something different in mexican food & ended up in this restaurant yesterday. This one advertises as Interior Mexican food. So the only veggie options are salads & spinach quesadilla.
The good thing about this restaurant is the staff are good but the food is really bad both tastewise & costwise.
I ordered a chicken Mancho Manzalates which is $14.50 but the amount of chicken I got is less than what you would get for chicken parmiagiana in Italian restaurants. The beans did not taste good either.
The chicken tasted weird .When you chew initially it would have the chicken flavor & as you are about to swallow it tasted like fish & I guess they are cooking fish & chicken together which does not let either have their unique taste. There were few raw banana pieces cooked which tasted bitter. The mole sauce was also not good.he beans did not taste good either. Overall one of the worst tasted food I had.
The quantity of the food is only enough for a 10 year old & not an adult.
Unless they improve either quantity wise or quality wise, they are marching towards their end.
Interior Mexican Food in South Austin. We have been to Hecho en Mexico many times since they opened. The food has always been excellent (the mole is the best I have had) and you can't beat the service. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and so efficient. We love having such a quality restaurant in SW Austin.
Food Not Good. The taste of the food was disappointing and just plain not tasty, I ordered tacos that I could have made at home with canned chicken and store bought flour tortillas....my husband's enchiladas tasted strange. Also, having spent considerable amount of time in Mexico and sampling food from various regions, this did not remind me of anything I have ever had there. Maybe we ordered the wrong things but we do not intend on returning to find out.
Great Breakfast Tacos!. I was hungry when passing by the other morning before work. I stopped in and ordered a few breakfast tacos to go. They were delicious and filled me up for the morning! The staff was VERY friendly as well. I hear they serve a great margarita and will be back!
Best service In Town. Great Staff, extremely friendly. Really good food and fair prices. Everything tasted fresh and was not the same old boring TexMex. We will be back and think that you should give it a try.
The best interior mexican food in Austin!!.
As a Mexican-born foodie, I can tell a good Mexican restaurant. This is it. By far, the most authentic interior Mexican restaurant I have found after 10 years of living in Austin. Everything we tried on the menu at Hecho en Mexico was really awesome .
The salsa borracha that came with the nachos was great but a bit mild for our taste. MIguel brough a tomatillo and habanero salsa that was phenomenal. Then we ordered mandarin Jarritos (a soda brand) and apetizers. Between 3 and 7 they have happy hour which means 50% apetizers. My wife loved the Ceviche, which was only $3.50 (after the discount) - a steal. The Huaraches were awesome, especially with a dash of sour cream. They were also $3.50.
I had the Enchiladas de Mole Poblano, which were as good as any I have had in Mexico. Very tasty and not too sweet. I have tried dozens of styles of Mole and this is very good. They also serve Mancha Manteles Mole (tablecloth stainer mole) which I will have to go back to try. My daughter had the Cochinita Pibil, which came with purple onion and wrapped in a banana leaf as it should. It was really tasty.
My wife had the Tacos al Pastor apetizer, they were so good that I had to order another set for me. A steal at $3.50 for 5 bite-sized tacos. The Tacos al Pastor were very tasty but not up to par with the rest. Still , I would have them again.
For desert we had Cajeta Flan. Boy, we love flan. My wife makes killer flan, this was just as good. It had only a hint of cajeta on topm of the caramel that comes with flan. The texture was fantastic. It was a great weay to end a great meal.
We paid about $52 for dinner for a family of four with apetizers and desert, in my book that is a very reasonable price. Considering how good the food was, it is a steal. For the other reviewer who said the restaurant was not authentic and expensive, you must have been to a different place.
If you want to try authentic interior Mexican food at a reasonable price, this is it. See you there!!
overpriced and not tasty. nice staff though.. I was hoping to have a new tasty fun place close to home, but no such luck. Its not awful but not good at all. We are not going back. Its not authentic interior mexican cuisine and its not tex mex either. It is very overpriced and there's no ambiance. The staff is nice and attentive but thats about all the positive we have to share. I wouldn't recommend it.
