Old-fashioned neighborhood bar tries gastropub cuisine.. This East Austin spot is so dark inside it takes a moment for one's eyes to adjust. The bar quickly becomes a cozy cavern in which meeting friends for a quick drink turns into a long, relaxed hang session. Fantastic, rustic menu offerings like daily soup and pate, cheese plate, and a bacon-wrapped Angus meatloaf will satisfy most diners, but the emphasis on local organic produce and vegan offerings means you could wind up sharing a plate of fried red and green tomatoes with aoli atop greens, a rare find in any other East Side dive bar.

With its dim interior and intimate, curtained seating areas, this casual hangout from the owners of Beerland and Rio Rita brings another cool nightlife option to East Sixth. The bar serves draft beer, an above-average wine list and expertly mixed cocktails while a surprisingly diverse menu of rustic comfort fare beckons patrons for some late dinner lounging (complete with jukebox background music). Menu standouts include a hearty Basque soup with winter squash and white beans, free-range chicken pot pie and Angus meatloaf with mashed potatoes. Sharable plates include the daily cheese plate, smoked rainbow trout spread and fried tomatoes with aioli.
