he Jackalope expands with a punk rock, flame-colored dive..
As Sixth Street is mainly a place for the masses to get dressed up, besotted and then totter home with each other, rocker bars with little-to-no "Woo!" factor are much appreciated (and jealously guarded) by Austin's underground set. This combo of punk dump with Mexican fare and beers and specialty drinks will appeal to those who like to hunker down for a few, maybe chow on some tacos, and laugh at those alarmed by the image of the spooky, mythical beast for whom this bar is named. The cocktails here can be smooth, like a margarita, or tougher than leather, like the Cock Fight, described as a "massive" shot of whiskey with a Highlife back, to release the inner bad-ass. The bar is granite, the walls sunset-orange and the art graphic and bold; overall, the place is tough but pretty.
