What Our Expert Scouts Say

January 02, 2013

A modish throwback with locavore sensibilities, Snack Bar is basically Central Texas tapas. There's crispy pork belly here (satisfying this city's enduring devotion to bacon), alongside more hippie fare like avocado quinoa, served with a skewer of sweet, perfectly cooked shrimp -- admittedly one of my favorite items on the menu, particularly after too many pork belly visits.

Vegan Dream BBQ. I tried the seitan BBQ sandwich here - perfectly presented on a crusty bread with pickled onions. Non-vegans will become believers.

Snack Bar never ceases to amaze! I have dreams about their delicious pineapple and avocado quinoa. Great place for gourmet American tapas.

missing link. For a street buzzing with traffic and options, I find Snack bar, to say the least, out of place. I am in town visiting from SF, where I am a known food critic, and I pick the one place on Congress that is lackluster. My husband and I flew in late, and were looking for a healthy option. We were staying at the San Jose, so a walk down to Snack Bar seemed to be the obvious choice. The decor is retro, and cute, although it looks as if they threw it together on a budget. We kind of thought the menu would be diner-ish, but it was more of hodgepodge of "what can we throw together so it seems like we have options", instead of a real idea. The service is unprofessional, but maybe that is part of the whole "keep it weird" movement-we were not fans. The food is bland, and that is being polite. There was no creativity, and mine turned up cold even though we were one of 2 tables. With a street full of options, we made the mistake of not walking a few extra steps to the locations that had flavor and true Austin ambiance. Such a shame, but after I did some research, the general opinion of this place seems to be on par with our experience.

just okay. I've been to Snack Bar 2 times and have been pretty underwhelmed. I want to love it because it's close by, the menu seems like it should be delicious and it's really cute and on the best street in Austin.....but as of now they really aren't up to par. 1st time happy hour-- i was hope for a fun laid back friday happy hour spot because their patio is gorgeous but alas...the smells of brewing coffee, empty restaurant and patio and no music made for a decidedly un-festive vibe. I think they are really missing out on the possibility of a happy hour crowd by keeping the atmosphere like a library, but I guess thy're going in a more coffee shop direction, The food was bland and poorly presented...cheese plate with low quality cheese and dried out veggies and stale bread. 2nd time--breakfast-- this is what their atmosphere was suited for. Food tasty service good untill- a hair in the eggs and no apology from the waitress. In this situation the waitress should apologize at least. In a really good restaurant the manager should also apologize and comp the meal. I was very nice and understanding about it---but apparently too much so cause I still paid for the hairy eggs. Thumbs down. i Sadly I've crossed Snack bar off the list but I wish them luck because it's a great idea, but is far from reaching its potential as of now.

Citysearch Editorial Review. It's hard not to love a hip little place that serves breakfast and lunch in the daylight hours, then turns into a a lounge with smaller plates of nibblies at night, all alongside beer and wine. With a gleeful emphasis on local fare and healthful, vegan menu items, patrons guzzle gluten-free beer or Odwalla mimosas with abandon and snarf down home-made millet or BLTs with equal zeal. Its prime South Congress location and dog-friendliness ensures lucky locals will park there and visit for ages, and yet the steady stream of folks cruising SoCo will ensure turnover on human and canine eye candy.
