What Our Expert Scouts Say

24 Diner
January 26, 2013

This downtown 24 hour diner has all the classics -- meatloaf, waffles, etc -- and I love how they use local ingredients when possible! If you're unsure about what to order, go with the chicken an waffles because the cinnamon sugar butter cannot be beat!

This contemporary diner may be small, but the fried egg sandwich is huge. Eat it with a fork to both savor the taste and save your face from getting covered in gooey, delicious egg.

24 Diner specializes in upscale riffs on comfort food, and man oh man, could I get used to this kind of comfort. If the chicken and waffles aren't enough to make your bleary eyes pop open, the bacon gorgonzola cheeseburger is.

Modern diner with locally-sourced deliciousness. A little loud but extra seating in back quieter. Chicken/waffles stand out. Great coffee.

Awful service and poor quality of food. After my partner ordered a well done burger with crispy bacon only, he was served a rare burger. The female manager on duty asked if everything was ok. We explained that it was not. She took the burger and said it would be ready in 4 minutes. I have worked in restaurants for many years and have not seen a burger cooked to well done in 4 minutes. About 10 minutes later, the burger was returned but without the bacon.

The waitress would refill cokes but would have to be asked on two occasions to bring a straw. The straw was brought with the first coke, but never on refills.

This is a place i will not return to nor will I recommend it to anyone for dining out.

Great food 24 hours a day. This place is a must after club hopping in the warehouse district. Always consistently good and never a disappointment. What they need to do is bring back the pork belly baguette sandwich...to die for. the waiter told me it was seasonal? Since when was pork seasonal...oh well, still gets five stars!

What a meal!!. First had the Charred Bitters, the perfect combination of crunch and loads of flavor. But then the Chicken and Waffles came out... wowee, this is comfort food beyond compare. I was in heaven and practically licked the plate dry... (My husband said I had maple syrup in my hair.. yikkes)

Highly recommend especially when you want breakfast in the middle of the nite!

limited breakfast menu for a 24 hour joint. It’s actually called 24 Diner.

I finally had time to visit for breakfast. The weather was really gross outside and I found a nice escape. The interior has really changed since it was a Waterloo; very clean and contemporary. It was only 25% full and I got a table right away. I waited a little while to be greeted but that gave me time to check out the menu.

The breakfast menu really pushes you towards an egg based meal. I’m not such a fan but found Chicken and Waffles. I asked about the Sparkies: jalapenos stuffed with pan sausage and cheese and fried. They were great but I only got two. I wouldn’t share if it was just two of us. The chicken and waffle was good. The waffle came with a maple bourbon butter that was amazing! The chicken is boneless and fried. The only complaint about the chicken was that it was very plain tasting. I think a salty fried chicken mixed with the sweet maple syrup would kill. Kinda like Roscoe's in LA. I liked it and they give you a lot of chicken. More than I could eat.

I had good service and had a nice breakfast. I think based on what I saw the lunch and dinner menu is far better and for a 24 hour place that surprises me that the breakfast menu is small. I totally miss the Biscuits with Sausage gravy that Waterloo served. It was a breakfast staple…so good. I am eager to go back and try some of the other offerings. One thing I don’t like is how close the other tables are. This is a gossip free diner as you are elbow to elbow with the next table. Overall my meal with coffee was $18 prior to tip.

The parking lot can get crowded and it’s at 6th & Lamar so traffic can be tough depending on where you approach it from. I think you should check it out for yourself.

Avoid the pork belly sandwich. I know that this sandwich sounds a bit gross but I like to try new things. The waitress assured me it was good though a tad heavy. I took a chance and LOST...the "pork" was tough and tasteless. Well it tasted a bit gamey actually. Was this a javelina from South Texas? My friends both liked their choices (a cheese burger and roasted chicken) so I haven't completely given up on the place but seriously just say no to this sandwich.

Citysearch Editorial Review. The staff of this sleek, modern diner promises boasts a collective pedigree that produces food closer to fine dining than greasy spoon. Its prime location sandwiched between major Austin retailers Waterloo and Book People and lush menu ensures that it will mostly be busy at peak times. High-quality updates to classic diner fare are what to expect, all with local, seasonal produce. While mac and cheese and BLTs are here, so are exotic, innovative dishes like the charred salad or bitter greens: radicchio, arugula, pine nuts, mushrooms and gorgonzola are sizzled in a cast-iron pan before landing on a plate, topped with a roasted shallot vinaigrette and sent to the table.
