Everyone else enjoyed it, but Uchiko
just isn't for me. The table decided to have a menu made for it, with me and a couple others opting to order our own plates. I was surprised to find that the plate I ordered was instead split for the whole table, meaning I only got a very small amount of what I actually wanted, and ended up with lots of small amounts of things I didn't want. The quality of the food itself was also so-so, and the desert (Tobacco Cream) tasted terrible.
Confusing service, mediocre food, and a staggering bill mean that I can't recommend Uchiko.
This place is truly amazing. It's not cheap, but I think it's worth every penny. I've been here about four times, and I've yet to be disappointed.
Lives up to the Hype. This place lives up to the hype. Paul Qui's masterful menu and consistently great front of house make it worth the money, too. Visit during social hour for a less expensive selection of customer favorites.
so-so.
Since this is my first time, I'll give Uchiko three stars. Maybe it was just a one-time bad experience.
While the restaurant is extremely avant-garde and edgy, I definitely did not enjoy the food. I went to Uchi before and I loved it- so I don't quite understand why I didn't like uchiko as much.
What I did not like was the Koviche- a japanese take of ceviche maybe? It had scallops covered with this chocolate powder. Personally, I didn't think it was a great combination, but I think I'm a picky eater.
What I loved is the Wagyu beef on the hot rocks. The beef just melts in your mouth. Absolutely delicious. (Uchi serves the same exact thing too- so If I had to make a choice I would just go to Uchi)
All in all, I thought the restaurant was so-so. I would much rather go to a different restaurant and pay much less.
Reservations are joke. We were a party of seven dressed for the evening for a dinner reservation at seven. After complaining numerous times we were finally seated at 7:45. We were told the party that had our table were having a birthday and they were sorry. We were having a birthday dinner too. We were having dinner while my son's friends arrange his surprise birthday with 80 guests. We were now nearly an hour behind schedule. To top the evening off the server walks up and says she knows we are in a hurry and headed to a "party". There went that surprise!!!!!! The evening was ruined. They said they would give us free edamame but they still charged us. By the time the bill came I just wanted to find the door and get out. Next time I will keep my $500. Smoke and mirrors. All sizzle and no meat! A waste of money!
Inspired......
Last night 10-9-10 my wife and I celebrated our 3 year anniversary at Uchiko. I have been following Chef Tyson Cole's career since we moved to Austin years ago. I watch his menu's change, and cheered for him during Iron Chef. I can tell you all as an Executive Chef for 15 plus years, that Tyson is on another level all together. His attention to detail not only in the design of his restaurants, and the set up of his kitchens but bite for bite. We must have ordered 10 different dishes, and not only were they amazing but each dish had such depth. Nothing about these dishes was anything less than perfect. The coolest part of it all was when we arrived Tyson wasnt walking around like some cocky prick with an attitude, no, he was in the thick of it, chef jacket on, complete focus on each plate as if nothing else on earth mattered but the plate before him, like a father looks at his first born child. And unlike all those food network chef ass holes that are there to boost there ego's instead of there food and service, he raised the bar. He assisted in even the food delivery to the table. The respect I have for this man and his team are beyond words. Even as a chef, I can tell you I would wash dishes for free just to be apart of this team and learn.
I felt like one of those screaming and crying girls in the old film footage of fans watching Elvis or the Beatles. My only regret of the night was that we didnt sit at the Sushi bar it self just to see more of the language and execution amongst the team. I suggest for every one to eat there. Uchiko makes other restaurants like French Laundry, and Craft like a bunch of children fresh out of culinary school with passion but not enough practice yet.
If you are a foodie and havent eaten here yet, you are a fool. Turn American Idol off and make a reservation now for your own good. And dont just tip your server, tip the kitchen team. They are the ones that come in earlier and leave later than all the servers making a killing every night.
great service and definitely yummy!.
i went there for my birthday and i had the best experience with my friends - they recognized our occasion and gave us a great table to enjoy with a group of 6 girls. the chef even sent us a gratitude dish! their menu is amazing filled with exotic sushi plates; the staff are very well trained and the ambiance of the restaurant makes you just want to stay longer.
i definitely recommend this place for a date, girls' night out, or business lunch/dinner.
Delicious Sushi with a Modern Twist. The service is impeccable. The staff is friendly and does not leave you wondering "where did that waiter go?". The menu is filled with savory items. I suggest the ham and eggs as well as the usagi tamago, rabbit confit, although this is not part of their sushi menu. I will definitely be back again!
The only place for Japanese in Austin!.
Very creative cuisine...the uni is pretty excellent and this is coming from a total sushi snob. I love the service, the presentation and the originality. I mean who can come up with a ham and egg maki roll that is truly out of this world?
I gave it 4 stars because if you want straight sushi, you still have to go to Uchi...
