While my inner snob prickles at some of Roll On's more liberal creations, like the "Cholesta Roll" -- a rice/gravy/chicken fried steak fever dream -- the overall concept of this sushi diner is a great one, falling somewhere between sushi food trailer and sushi restaurant proper. Aside from the Cholesta Roll, I've had some fresh, lovely rolls here, like the Hippie Roll, filled with cucumber, avocado and asparagus.

If you love sushi, but don't want to pay $$, Roll On is a must. Their plates range from $3.95-$6.95. Try their Beefy Texan brisket roll. Mmm
Always Yummyyyyyy! We go there alot with my brother in law...consistently good!
delicious combinations, affordable prices, fun atmosphere! There are rolls here for people who don't eat raw fish, so you can even bring friends who aren't traditional sushi fans!
Quality sushi rolls at a price that
won't break the bank, with a quirky menu of both traditional rolls and Austin-centric fusion rolls. I mean really, you can totally convince the boyfriend or husband to try sushi when it means he'll be eating chicken fried steak, right?
You have to try Roll On Sushi Diner for lunch, when their special is less than $10 and comes out quickly, or for happy hour when sake bombs rule, or for brunch on Saturday! I do date nights with the husband, lunches and happy hours with my girlfriends. Perfection!
Beefy Texan? They've Got 'em.. Cheekily-named fusion rolls like the Beefy Texan and the Guaca-rolly are standouts here, as is the quick and reasonable lunch special.
While the regular sushi is awesome, be sure to try the Austin fusion rolls. My favorite is the Beefy Texan!!
Traditional Sushi with flair. I tried this new sushi diner because of the fusion sushi reviews. After trying different items, I decided that the traditional sushi was really great. I liked the fusion rolls a lot but the traditional sushi will keep me coming back.
As Unique as Austin - and So Delicious.
I've been to Roll On Sushi Diner more times than I care to admit. This restaurant is one of the coolest spots I eat at in Austin. The atmosphere is very cool: mix an old counter service diner style with a very modern, artistic flair. Great colors and I love the music. Be forewarned, this is not a quiet lunch/dinner spot. This is not somewhere you go to eat a traditional restaurant meal in a booth with a darkly lit, slow ambience. Roll On is more of a social, musical experience.
You can see the chefs at work behind the counter and they're creating an eclectic mix of foods displayed on their large menu above you. They serve a variety of traditional rolls and sashimi/nigiri specials, and they're incredible. Some of them step out slightly into a more fusion approach to traditional sushi, like a tuna roll with quacamole, jalapeno and spicy mayo. Then there's the "Austin Fusion" section of the menu, which steps wildly into an unforeseen territory of sushi rolls. They have a tomato caprese roll, a Caribbean shrimp roll, a chicken-fried steak roll, and a bbq beef roll, amongst others. It's all extremely good. My personal favorites on the menu (pretty much the ones I order every time now) are the California Crunch Roll, the Dy-No-Mite! Roll (this will own you), and the Barton Springs Salad. I also go for the Hippy Roll and the Respect My Asparagah! Roll which are vegetarian options. Vegans and vegetarians can eat well here, as well as those who are gluten free, like my wife (bring your own gluten free soy sauce).
I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone I meet. I even spoke about it with some random woman in a Walgreens buying ice cream the other night. I also bring folks with me from all over, and they've done the same. This is the kind of place that will be a great success in Austin for a long time.
Fusion Sushi Rocked My World!.
I was so happy to hear that Roll On received "Best New Sushi Place" by Citysearch. I would argue that it should receive best new place in Austin - period. I am a sushi lover. I hate to say connoisseur (only because I'm still working towards being rich enough to go as often as I would like) but I do know the difference between delectable and detestable. Roll On offers the best of both delectable traditional sushi and mind-blowing fusion surprises. I promise you, if I could eat the Beefy Texan Rolls and Bowl everyday (Beef Brisket in a Wasabi sauce) I WOULD!
Keep up the great work Roll On, and save my seat at the counter!
Best Sushi Restaurant in Austin and I know why.. Unbelievable. Amazing. Delicious....DIFFERENT. While Roll On Sushi Diner represents all the words I listed above (and a few more), the last one (different) will set this place apart from every other sushi restaurant in Austin. This place IS Austin, it IS "wierd" and it IS tasty.
