What Our Expert Scouts Are Saying

El Alma Cafe Y Cantina
Here's the the thing about Mexican cuisine. Be it enchiladas, tostadas, fajitas or the humble taco, Tex-Mex is soul food for central Texans. But take it from me (a San Antonian): sometimes, we crave variety. Change. We look down at our salmon-colored ceramic plate and think: "If I eat one more freaking black bean then SOMEBODY will pay, amigos." Fortunately, chef Alma Alcocer-Thomas has heeded our calls at El Alma. Her riffs on Mexican classics are inspired, higher-end dishes of the stuff we're used to: Think roasted duck-stuffed relleno, shrimp-filled poblanos and rich corn pudding. The results? Fantastico.

Great food with a Cozy Atmosphere. I tried this place when it was under different management and I wasn’t impressed, but after lunch today I think I have found a new Downtown delight. The place is cozy and offers interior Mexican food at a reasonable price. Maybe a little too much for lunch but the food was amazing. The green tomatillo salsa was to die for and the red has a very distinctive smoky chipotle taste to it. We started with their guacamole with chipotle cream and It was absolute delicious. The addition of sunflower seeds was a surprise but added the flavors. For lunch my wife ordered their lunch taco special, which she was able to choose two tacos from there menu, she choose a chicken and fish. Both had unique tastes and the fish taco, which was Black Drum, was of particular note. I ordered their Pollo Asado which was a grilled chicken breast topped with queso panela, caramelized onions and chipotle salsa. It was amazing and the sauce was not over powering but emphasized the chicken flavor. The wait staff was friendly and very helpful with the menu. Over all it was a pleasant experience and we will go again.
