Just off S. First and right next door to the Soup Peddler, this shop is a tiny explosion of creative goodness: Owners Jennifer and Joseph Worth are photographers and artists, peddling beautiful prints from their travels around the world and around the city, which then become coasters, cutting boards, or framed pieces of art. On top of that, some of the best-fitting vintage dresses I have ever bought have come from South Austin Gallery. That's because this is one of the only places in town that sells vintage clothing that's already been reconstructed. Grandma's nightgown becomes a cute sundress, an 80s pantsuit becomes an adorable romper ... and what appears to be one of the Jackson 5's show costumes became a cocktail dress, which now hangs in my closet.
Art photography shop, vintage clothing
store, and photo booth all under one teeny tiny roof, South Austin Gallery is a best-kept-secret that I want to spoil. What I love about their clothing is that they take non-sexy vintage -- think Grandma's long-sleeved frilly nightgown -- and tailor it into hip, modern shapes, so that you get a contemporary piece with a throwback feel.
