Delicious Food.
Went on a Saturday afternoon -- the food was great! Awesome Dolmades, Avgalemono Soup and other appetizers. We had a very nice waitress and she really helped us enjoy the experience.
Moved here from DC and use to lots of ethnic food and this Greek treat was very competive... And being Greek -- I know greek food.
The best Greek food in Austin - by far!. I eat out all the time. I travel around the country and around the world a fairly good amount. This has some of the best Greek food that I have ever had. I agree with one reviewer who said something about the chicken salad being a bit dry. Other than that, it's 10 stars. The outdoor seating area is awesome now that the weather is decent.
Horrible!!. Food was horrible and service completely lacking. Owner was very condescending re: our complaints.
ERRRRR...SO WRONG!~.
Worst experince...first we walk in Sat. at 6:45... no one in the place.... has the whole feel like is this place even any good....so since we had a rest coupon we go thru with it....the soup was salty, but I like it salty so it was delish to me...then the salad was warm, but the dressing was tasty...the waitress brags about the taziki so we are all excited, it comes and OH SO bland...and the hummus runny and VERY bland...so I eat my spinach in hopes to get some good for me food in... after a few bites, I think what is wrong with this....I LOVE spinach, then I realize they put green peppers in it and ruined me... they make me sick...SO note to people/ write exactly/ what you put in your dishes, so a person doesn't have to get sick on your food.
So the dish was unique roasted chicken---it came out dried out and flavorless....so we finish up meal, give the waitress our coupon and she says cool, like totally no big deal....shortly after the manager/GF who only sat at bar drinking tea, so who knows what she is...tapes up a peice of printer paper on doors as this is all happening, stating they don't take coupons-TACKY!!!!!!!....if I would of had that sign up, I would of never ate there in the first place due to lack of business...but gave a shot due to COUPON!!!!!
so waitress comes back after saying cool and said her boss told her rest com doesn't work anymore WTF...and then she has the gall to say we can go on website and get 10% off.....so DH insists on getting that at least...just the whole feel was so unprofessional and then to leave with a belly ache, due to a not accurate descriptions... errrrrrr---could of went to so many other amazing greek rest. in area...
Amazing Mediterranean Restaurant Downtown!.

Most Excellent Mediterranean Restaurant in Austin.
I am proud to say I am Athenian's biggest fan.
I've eaten at this authentic Greek restaurant four days a week for nearly three years (except for the occasional sick day and holiday, during which I pine for my daily chicken salad fix). I honestly think they get a little worried when I miss a day.
The plates are so generous--not to mention scrumptious--that you could very easily take home leftovers for dinner.
I can't live without the chicken salad (#1 on the menu and their specialty). The chicken is marinated in some special sauce that owner/chef Anil keeps secret (but promises is very healthy) and grilled on a sort of upright broiler which browns the chicken to a light crisp. I love watching them thinly slice the chicken off the spit. It's an art. Add the veggies--romaine lettuce, red onions, bell peppers--and a bit of feta cheese and homemade Italian-like dressing and you've got yourself a little bit of Heaven.
But my actual favorite (can't have it now because I'm supposed to be gluten free) is the chicken sandwich, which is the same delicious chicken and veggies on a warm, homemade pita topped with the absolute most divine tzatziki sauce (they never laugh at me when I mispronounce it). It's a sour cream base rather than yogurt. Wonderfully fresh tasting!
I also love the hummus and the yummy baklava. My husband prefers the lamb dishes. The menu is quite extensive and offers vegetarian dishes as well.
Layout is perfect for the busy lunch crowd, with a buffet-type line led by the most efficient and speedy staff (See, I've gotten to know everyone). Then for dinner it turns into a beautifully appointed, white-tablecloth restaurant with a full bar and a great wine list.
I promise you will be a repeat customer if you just try it once...
Best Mediterranean Food in Austin. I am a huge fan of this restaurant and eat here often so it is about time I write a review. The owner and staff treat everyone like family and go out of there way to make sure you enjoy your meal. The service is second to none and I feel like I am at home when I walk in the doors. You must try both lunch and dinner because they are a different experience that deserve to be enjoyed. I had lunch there yesterday with my 76 year old father and Anil treated my father like he was a long lost friend. I appreciate what this restaurant brings to our city and I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy this treasure in downtown!!!!
Yum!!!! Rock on Athenian!.
I'm surprised to see anything less than 5 star reviews here. I've been living in San Marcos for too long eating something that they've somehow managed to label "hummus" without a fair judge to call it otherwise. However, I've returned to Austin and discovered this hidden Greek secret on 6th.
Holy smokes!
Now this is hummus! Every time I come to visit I order the hummus. Maybe some beer, or wine, or a tequila shot. Whatever, it doesn't matter. I'm getting my hummus. I buy hummus at Whole Foods, HEB, and Central Market...nothing is this good. So I'm hooked.
I bought a lamb dish. Sovlaki I think it was called. or souvlaki I can't remember, but it must have weighed a pound or two. So much food for the dollar. The quality of the meat was perfectly tender and cooked just the way I asked. Well done.
The staff is intelligent, young, and friendly. It's never too packed and always has a nice charm to it. I enjoy the atmosphere just as much as the food.
There's an outdoor patio as well with a view of 6th and music to listen to. I haven't been here for lunch yet, since I'm too busy during the day, but dinner...is to die for. Great for dates. Very romantic.
You won't be disappointed.
Fantastic Downtown Restaurant!. Athenian Bar & Grill is a fabulous family run restaurant right in the heart of downtown. The owner and his family are excellent hosts and bend over backward to please. The portions are huge and the prices reasonable. I eat there at least once a week for lunch. And don't miss out on their dinner menu, the lamb chops are wonderful especially when eaten in the exterior courtyard. A real Austin gem. I recommend Athenian Bar & Grill for everyone!
Best Mediterranean Restaurant in Austin!. Athenian Bar & Grill is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. All their dishes are made fresh daily and are super delicious and tasty. My personal favorite is their Gyro. Loaded up with savory, thin sliced meat, tons of fresh vegetables and tzatziki sauce. This dish would sure be a crowd pleasure for even the toughest critics. If you haven't tried Athenian Bar & Grill- I highly recommended it to anyone! Enjoy!
