Austin >The Soup Peddler
Soup Peddler/Juice Box is the liquid diet king! Amazing soup. Amazing juice. And the best grilled cheese.
The Soup Peddler -- a delivery service, brick n' mortar eatery and now a cookbook -- is fronted by David Ansel, a techie-turned-yogi-turned-homemade soup deliverer. Founded over 10 years ago as a one-man operation, The Soup Peddler has blossomed into a beloved Austin institution: each week brings a new installment of fresh (mostly vegetarian) soups and other delicious yogi-approved dishes, like the beet and apple-filled borscht, a kale/spinach/parsley/celery juice cleanse, and zucchini, squash, broccoli, bell pepper, carrot and tofu stir fry.
Good food, but didn't get what we paid for.
I stopped for a quick lunch here on Sunday. I got the shrimp soup and my companion ordered a watermelon strawberry smoothie. The soup was hot and tasty, but suffered a little from sitting too long on the stove. The smoothie tasted wrong -- sour and like the melon was past its prime. He exchanged it for the pork soup, which was also hot and tasty. Both soups had plenty of meat and vegetables, more liike stews than soups.
Unfortunately the service was not too good. In the exchange, we paid an extra dollar (over the price of the returned smoothie) to get the 16 oz size soup and got only 12 oz. along with some attitude. As we were leaving we noticed on the rear-side menu that all soups "come with bread or crackers." We were offered neither.
